The show will feature clips from Award Winning Producer/ Director Lexy Lovell’s new documentary “The Good Soldier” which tracks the progress of 3 Veteran’s returning home from three Wars: WWII, Vietnam and Gulf War One as they attempt to assimilate in to society. The excerpt was presented on Bill Moyer’s Journal this past Friday 11/6. It packs a powerful antiwar message. The film itself will be released to the general public Wed 11/11 Veterans’s day. Hear clips here first. Our show will also feature excerpts from a Bill Moyers editorial in which he challenges a Washington Post editorial of 10/30/09 that calls the US presence in Afhanistan a “neccesary war.”
Moyers calls for institution of a draft to make the military call up which Obama will inevitably announce soon more equitable.

DINNER ON US PSA: In Amherst there will be a free weekly roundtable discussion series for campus and Amherst Family Center families with young children called Dinner on Us, Monday evenings during the academic year in the Student Union Building. As far as I know it’s open to all, but if they run into over enrollment, I’m sure that they will prioritize UMASS students, staff, and alums, as well as AFC families. Sessions are free and include: dinner, supervised children’s activities and parking. Family Dinner: 5:15-5:45pm, Supervised Children’s Activities: 5:45-7:30pm, Roundtable Discussion: 6:00-7:30pm. Space is limited. To pre-register call: 413-545-4466 OR email cshrc@stuaf.umass.edu.

Greetings Earthlings. Jean’s back! Hopefully she’ll have a report from the front lines. We return to the scene of the crime with another look at fossil fuels and what’s out there to replace them. Professor <a href=” http://umassmag.com/2008/Spring_2008/Prerequisite/biofuel.html”>George Huber</a>, researcher at UMass Amherst’s Chemical Engineering Department joins us in the studio for a look at biofuels that don’t eat up the crops. As always, we’ll checkout the Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the latest news on the environment, and we’ll see what Darth Cheney and the boy emperor are up to, as well as give you the quote of the week, but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! <a href=” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOnfRt2zf14&feature=related”>Sheep attacks car!</a> OK fans, talk about a Dodge Ram. How about a VW Ram? This is a see-it-to-believe-it video version of Revenge of the Critters. An Enviro Show blog exclusive!<p>

Here’s the Enviro Show Quote of the Week: “There is nothing more important in the culture of man [and we'd add: woman]than to resist the dangers of commerce” -Ralph Waldo Emerson. <p>

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we celebrate the end of the road for the <a href=”http://www.grist.org/news/2008/06/03/hummer/?source=daily#comments”>Hummer</a>. Toooo bad! Instead, according to the Washington Post, <a href=”http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/02/AR2008060201545_pf.html”>Travelers are turning to public transportation</a>. Meanwhile, the International Herald Tribune tells us <a href=http://www.iht.com/bin/printfriendly.php?id=12874048>bike sales are up</a>. AND this from Reuters: <a href=”http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSL03622524″>Pact needed to save biofuels</a> (what? Crops for food, not for fuel? How last year is that??) AND finally, though we’re not big Thomas Friedman fans, we can’t help but echo some of the sentiment he expressed in <a href=”http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/28/opinion/28friedman.html”>this piece</a> in his New York Times column. <p>

There it is again! That god-awful theme music. Glen, tell us when it’s FINALLY over! This just in: In a report long delayed by partisan squabbling, the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday accused President Bush and Vice President Cheney of taking the country to war in Iraq by exaggerating evidence of links between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda. SURPRIZE! Also, Bush regime crony says goal for rich countries to curb greenhouse gases are <a href” http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN0337238320080604”>”frankly not do-able for us”</a>. No? Did you check that with Darth? <p>

Speaking of Darth and the boy emperor,“Petroleum Bonapart” by Jim Page, longtime enviro troubadour, takes us to our interview with George Huber. Word has it that his daughter will be sitting in with us so we’ll try to behave like adults……maybe.<p>

Then we’ll browse the Bus Stop Billboard for the latest:

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 from 7 – 8 PM. CITIZENS UNITED FOR A HEALTHY FUTURE GENERAL MEETING. Toxics Action will be giving a presentation on Zero Waste in the Social Room of the Unitarian Society, 220 Main Street, Northampton (please walk down the driveway and use right side door, the meeting is downstairs). The proposed Northampton Regional Landfill expansion over the Barnes aquifer threatens the public drinking water supply in our area. If it goes forward, it would exempt a landfill in a Water Supply Protection District for the first time in Massachusetts.

Thursday, June 12, 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ZONING ENFORCEMENT APPEAL City Council Chambers & Planning Director’s Office, Puchalski Building and Northampton City Hall Room 10, 212 and 210 Main Street Northampton MA.
5:30 p.m. ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS meets in the Council Chambers to hear an appeal of the Building Commissioner’s decision on alleged zoning violations of the Northampton Regional Landfill and seeking discontinuance of use as regional sanitary landfill. Citizens United for a Healthy Future. Stop the Northampton landfill expansion. www.savingparadise.info

Wednesday,June 18, 7 pm. NUCLEAR POWER: AT WHAT COST? Bangs Community Center, Boltwood Walk, Amherst, MA (behind the Unitarian Meetinghouse, Kellogg and N. Pleasant Sts.). The Enviro Show is a proud co-sponsor, btw. Call 256-1760

June 20-21, TAKING CHARGE OF OUR ENERGY FUTURE. UMass Amherst Campus Center, Amherst, MA. The Summit will be a hotbed of activity helping to create a network of thriving local communities – urban and rural – working together across race and class -building a way of life and an energy future that is sustainable and just.

Wednesday June 25. 5:30-7:30pm, ARE “GREEN JOBS” UNION JOBS? Pioneer Valley CLC, 640 Page Blvd, Springfield. Green Jobs are all the rage now – for good reason, especially in Western Mass, where retrofitting buildings could provide a lot of jobs and we have the expertise. But not everyone is talking Green Jobs as Union Jobs and the possibility of Scabby Green Jobs looms large here. A Working Group on the Green Economy will discuss the issue. Info: Jon Weissman, 827-0301, wmjwj@wmjwj.org.

So much for this week. Next time it’s Chris Cuomo with some climate crisis observations from way up north. Until then remember: listen to your Mother! ]

The following proposal was presented by Emily Miller at the general membership meeting on September 20, 2006.

The VFR Retreat Proposal was developed in conversation with several VFR volunteers from the Operations and the Programming Committees. It is responding to the ongoing volunteer crisis and communication problems at the radio station. It is also inspired by VFR’s one year anniversary, and a strong desire to improve the overall culture at VFR: to build a bridge between programmers and the organization as a whole. There are several important details that will need to be worked out if this outline is approved by the general membership. The Retreat’s success depends on participation and support. If you think this idea is one worth trying, I invite you to share your ideas and critical feedback between now and the next general meeting in October.

Feel free to email me with questions too.

thanks,
Emily
emilyemiller@earthlink.net

What will happen?

• VFR will suspend live programming for 2 full weeks.
• Programmers can put their shows, new or old, into automation for their regularly scheduled show times
• Programmers will come to station during their program time (unless they make arrangements to come at another time) to participate in ongoing “retreat”.

Goals?

• To build a bridge between programmers and the organization as a whole.
• To improve communications and studio management
• To support the timely and efficient follow thru on the volunteer task force plan.
• To create better conditions for everyone at VFR.

Why?

• We have a volunteer crisis and very low meeting attendance.
• There are over 100 programmers who have agreed to volunteer 2 hours a month.
• Everybody who has a show on VFR can show up for this–it makes it easier for programmers to connect and find positive ways to contribute to the station.
• The programming committee needs up-to-date contact info from programmers, both to communicate effectively and to fairly review and respond to scheduling requests.
• The Volunteer Task Force plan depends on being able to communicate with all current programmers. This retreat ensures that the connection with the people who need to be reached will be made within 2 weeks.

To Do

• update programmer information for Programming Commitee and Volunteer Task Force
• Create database for both committees (see VTF plan)
• All programmers connect to a volunteer team (see plan)
• Collect program information/descriptions for the entire schedule and create materials to distribute through out listening area.

In March, when I began the project of helping VFR get a new site off the ground, there were many problems with the Web systems that VFR uses. Today there are fewer of those problems, but they have been replaced by different ones.

Before I give you an update on the work of the Web committee, including accomplishments and issues that still need addressing, I would like to make a plea for your patience. The committee is essentially comprised of three people: Candace Clement, Seth Jackson, and myself. Our small, mighty group has many skills–though not all of the skills that would solve outstanding issues tomorrow (that is, if these problems were within our control); therefore, we are learning new things everyday to improve the VFR Web technology. Again, like everyone else at VFR, we are a volunteer crew. We’re doing our best to leverage the power of the Web in the best interest of the VFR.

I am not going to address the technical aspects of the Topica list, as I am not familiar with its intricacies, but I can tell you our plans and the status of our work. The ultimate goal is to dump the Topica list in favor of a moderated list hosted on our own server. This has not happened yet because of our server and the service from the hosting company is very poor; we are in the process of gathering information to make a decision about a new hosting company. The good news is that our server contract is only three months long (August 1 begins the next three month period).

Without getting into all the technical nuts and bolts of the situation, our server problems have shutdown all VFR email functions (thus no moderated email list and instead contact email addresses using Gmail). This is a disappointment to us all because it has hampered our Web development plans. You might notice that the site is sometimes extremely slow; that too is the result of our underperforming server, and has made us gun-shy about adding new features on this server.

Here is a partial list of our plans–always being revised with input from the VFR membership–for when the server situation is resolved:

start a dynamic calendar that will list meetings, events, and the programming schedule

have a moderated email list to replace Topica

allow members to have valleyfreeradio.org email addresses (depending availability)

have pages for each collective where programmers can write about their shows

a better streaming set-up

a show archiving system

set-up a project management system so VFR committees and collectives can track tasks of various projects

And I am sure there are others! The list is probably endless.

What have we accomplished so far? Well, for starters, you’re looking at it! Okay, the “look” isn’t that fancy (yet), but that will change in the not too distant future. Getting the content management system (CMS) running, with content from the old site in place, was a significant accomplishment (many thanks to those who have expressed their appreciation). We have an email system in place so emails are not bounced. Thanks to the work of Seth and others, we have VFR streaming over the Web. Meeting times, agendas, and minutes are now posted on the site. The VFR site can now take donations, and the site provided regular updates during the fund drive.

In closing, that is a brief status report of the Web Committee work. The Committee could always use help; in particular, I need help from someone who is very experienced in graphic design using Illustrator and PhotoShop. As I am working on both the programming and architecture of the site, it would speed the work if I could direct a graphic designer.

Thanks for your attention.

I have been receiving some questions about the site design and logo status, so I will try to answer them here.

The first question I would like to address is, why isn’t there a logo on the site? There are a number of reasons, not the least of which is when I offered my services there was a pretty big conflict about a butterfly logo iteration. However, I see my role as someone that tries to implement the vision of VFR while also using my expertise to guide the project using Web design “best practices”. I was able to get a consensus that the butterfly logo, as designed, was not a good choice, and that a logo had already been chosen and approved. I have therefore been working under the assumption that the circle logo (the original) is the jumping off point.

My design is not finished. Not close to being finished; it’s just an embryo, not even a baby. What you see now is the work I am doing to establish the architecture of the site–not how it “looks”. I am working on the “skin” of the site now. So, why put the site up in such a state? Well, were you happy with the site before? Probably not. Nobody else was either, so that is why we’re here.

I will give you a verbal preview of what I am working on, because I have established some clear design parameters. The logo as you know it will only appear on the footer of every page; I have taken elements from that logo (the type face, the lightning bolts), and used them on the header and other places on the page.

Why am I doing this? The easiest way to explain the design issue is to ask you to recall how many closed circle logos you find on the top of Web pages–not many, and hardly any on what I would consider the best Web page designs. It’s very tricky because this closed circle (like the VFR logo) doesn’t lend itself to playing nice within a Web page design–which is all about spreading out and down. Having a little ball at the top of the page when most of the other elements are linear doesn’t look balanced.

Could I still use the logo and force the issue–putting it right at the top. Most certainly. No problem. But then I wouldn’t be doing my job correctly–I’m not a stenographer. Again, I am taking the vision of others and trying to filter that through the best practices of Web design.

So, the most comforting words I can offer is that you’ll have to trust me. That’s all I have. As I have mentioned to some people, my design goal is to take your breath away when the new design loads into your browser for the first time. I am not after a “nice” design.

Thanks for your interest in the work the Web committee is doing; stay tuned to this site, as we are trying to give regular status reports.

Recommendation

Background: Dominoes in Community Life

The Domino Outreach Model takes its name in honor of Puerto Rico’s favorite past time: Dominoes. “El Dominó” is for Puerto Ricans and many Latinos, not simply a game of strategy or just a pastime, but also it is an activity around which community relationships are built and sustained. Dominoes are played in all circles in the Puerto Rican society by people of all ages. It is primarily known as a family game, since it is learned by children from their fathers, uncles, and grandfathers. Although it is a game usually played at home, it is also played where friends gather. Women play with men and children. It includes everybody. In Dominoes, it is interesting that one of the team strategies summarizes a community theme: “The best offensive strategy is to defend your partner.”

This game, easy to learn by children yet challenging enough for adults, is an important part in the communal life of many Latin American communities, both abroad and in the USA. It provides the perfect excuse for community members to sit for hours around the tables, combining competition with camaraderie, and it also provides the occasion for sharing information, through word of mouth, about important issues that affect the participants. Around the domino table, the players’ families also interact, cooking, playing music together and just mingling; therefore dominoes becomes a social-familiar event, almost a ritual, in which all become refreshed and spiritually recharged.

[Back to the contents]

VFR and the Domino Model

It must be understood that many of these communities where the Domino is very popular, are underrepresented in the major media such as newspapers, radio, magazine and others. This means that the main source of reliable information necessary for members of these communities will come from their own neighbors, family or friends–in other words, their personal and community networks they trust the most because they know them the best. This way of exchanging information applies to any underrepresented group, not only to people of color.

This proposal to adopt the Domino Outreach Model as VFR’s basic strategy to develop its audiences has been inspired in the ways that the underrepresented communities establish links and relations outside the mainstream. If implemented it will accomplish three things:

It will allow VFR’s membership—which is part of the larger community—to reach populations that most likely will not be reach through the usual media outlets.

It will establish a two way relationship with members of the community to gather the information that will allow VFR to stay connected and in tune with the community, and

It will be able to better fulfill the community’s own expressed needs, and therefore establish the support and resources that VFR will need to stay vital in the long run (sustainability).

[Back to the contents]

Description of the Domino Model

The Domino model is a complex concept that is easy to learn if divided in five separate sections which reflect the main concepts. At first, it may seem difficult to grasp in its totality since it is not the usual way most people operate in the mainstream, nor does it resemble the “regular” outreach techniques. It is hard to explain in short sentences the whole concept, but to give an idea, the titles of the five parts of the concepts are:

VFR and its Commuity Context – An explanation of why VFR would benefit from doing outreach based on one to one relationships rather than impersonal “publicity.”

The Double Role of VFR’s Member’s in the Community – Any VFR member can act as a “two way door,” bringing information from the community and promoting VFR to audiences as appropriate in any interaction.

Building Relationships: The Right Attitude – How to best approach people to develop respectful long lasting relationships within general and underrepresented communities.

One to One Outreach: Talk to One, Reach Ten — A strategy to build audience by identifying leaders of the community you want to reach.

Targeting Communities Outside your Personal Networks — 1. Tips to venture into groups outside your own familiar networks. 2. Coordinating with people of color in VFR.

[Back to the contents]

Recommendation

The proposal is that VFR require all VFR members to receive the Domino Outreach Model Presentation/training. It will be left to each member how much time or effort s/he will give to implement any of its parts. Because of differences in lifestyles, personalities, time available and other variables, it is understood that not everybody may be able to actually implement all the skills constantly. This approach is organic. It happens in the supermarket, talking to interested friends, in casual conversations. It does not necessarily imply taking extra time outside of normal activities to actually talk and listen to people in your own networks. (Although if someone feels inclined to do so, it is welcomed.)

The idea is that of approximately 300 members that are registered in VFR, if each could try to develop audiences for the station within their own networks (even one person at a time) and spread the word in friendly networks, the impact of every encounter done with awareness will build up, and with time VFR will become a network of networks. This happens naturally in many communities, and this type of growth is a principle that has proved to be efficient in many community contexts. In fact it was the oldest way to pass information before technological media came about.

With this proposal, I hope that the Domino Model becomes part of the VFR’s organizational culture and that it becomes as natural for members to learn it as it is to learn to operate the radio equipment. Adopting this model could be the difference between doing the same thing other stations do, namely, programming for very limited audiences, or truly linking with diverse audiences. My suggestion is to take an hour to have the presentation first, and then make a decision about the Proposal for the whole organization. I am available to meet and give the presentation to groups or individuals on request.
