Greetings Earthlings. We celebrate the Return of the Sun with Cassie and Winifred of Awentree in Easthampton. No, it’s not the manifestation of Bill O’Reilly’s “War against Christmas”, but hey, let’s talk about the Christian War against Pagans while we’re at it! Speaking of war, we’ll checkout that infamous warmonger Darth Cheney and his target practice dummy (btw, do not throw your shoes at the radio). As always, we’ll peek into The Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the news of the day and give you the Quote of the week, but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Santa attacked by bobcat in Jersey!

There’s that theme again! So Glen, how long before Darth & the boy emperor have to hang their stockings somewhere else? As you may have heard, W has been very naughty: he’s endangered the polar bears. Santa will not be pleased!

That heartwarming tune, “All I want for Christmas is to impeach the President” takes us to the Enviro Show Echo Chamber where there’s good news to report (finally!), three dams are to be taken out on the Klamath River in Oregon and California (you see, it’s not all gloom & doom). Having said that, the Amazon? Not so much. AND this: Obama’s pick of Ken Salazar for Interior Secretary gets mixed reviews. ALSO, another Enviro Show Video Blog Special, this one for the holidays!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from Jonathan Swift: “We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.”

The Pagans & the Christians” by Dar Williams takes us to our interview with…..the pagans!

Then it’s on to the Bus Stop Billboard for a brief perusal:

Saturday, January 10. Washington, DC or…? Keep Winter Cold Polar Bear Plunge. We chose this date because the newly-elected U.S. Congress will be returning to Capitol Hill around this time.
We’ll go out with “The holidays are here and we’re still at war” by Brett Dennen. Can you belive this?? Next time it’s the wonderful world of run-off. Until then remember: listen to your Mother!

Greetings Earthlings. It’s a proposed landfill expansion hootenanny! Mary Serreze, whose recent piece in The Valley Advocate about Zero Waste and the dump issue, joins us to ask the musical question: Does your water taste funny when your neighbors dump on it? Also, we look deep into the darkness with Darth Cheney and the boy emperor. We’ll checkout The Enviro Show Echo Chamber and the Quote of the Week, but first it’s time for… Revenge of the Critters! Shark attacks boy….in his bedroom!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from author, Susan Griffin: “The part of the mind that is dark to us in this culture, that is sleeping in us, that we name ‘unconscious’, is the knowledge that we are inseparable from all other beings in the universe”.

There’s the Darth Cheney fanfare again! Glen! Tell us it’s over NOW!! When do Darth Cheney and his little sock puppet exit stage right? We’ve been talking these past few weeks about all the ecological damage these enemies of the planet are doing on their way out the door. Last time we delved into the top 100 Bush regime rollbacks. Now add this one: their vile minions in the EPA have finalized rules that will make it easier for mountaintop mining companies to dump their waste near rivers and streams.

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we pile on DC insiders Environmental Defense along with our friends from Rising Tide over that carbon trading scam you keep hearing about. Also, did Big Auto really earn that loan? AND, Obama embraces Big Oil with the James Jones pick.

Then, live from the luxurious Pine Street Studios of WXOJ-LP it’s Mary Serreze and the Zero Waste Valley Band! After Mary rocks the walls we’ll have a chat about this concept of putting a dump over an aquifer. Is that living better through chemistry??

Then it’s on to the Bus Stop Billboard:

Tuesday, December 9 at 8 PM. Talk to Bill McKibben and Michael Brune about Global Warming. Prepare for an earnest and lively discussion with RAN Executive Director Michael Brune and writer-activist Bill McKibben, followed by a Q & A the steps we need to take collectively to free our country and our world of fossil fuels. You can remind Bill that Cape Wind is the privatization of the Commons! Just call: 1-866-864-8698 And type in the passcode: 1051283210

Thurday, December 11, 6pm. Home Depot “Grand Opening” sprawl teach-in. Food for Thought Books, Amherst. Scheduled speakers so far include Emily Kawano (populareconomics.org), Jeff Lacey (Shutes Planning Board and professional planner, who will project some great slides on the wall). We’ll be approaching the issue from the same diversity of perspectives that worked so nicely for the wal-mart campaign: local economy, downtowns, employers, domestic workers, sweatshops abroad, students, seniors, environmentalists, cyclists, etc. For info call: 413 549 1193

On the next Enviro Show Mary Serreze joins us for a live broadcast of her Northampton Landfill tune and a conversation about the proposed extension of the dump, yes, over the Barnes Aquifer! More great ideas for the “Paradise City”!! For a video of her song go HERE.

Things are heating up in Europe around the upcoming COP15 international climate talks (see below), but the climate crisis seems to be taking a backseat to the financial crisis here in the States. In fact, the incoming Obama Administration doesn’t even use the term “climate crisis”, instead falling back on the old “climate change” or “global warming” labels. So, no crisis, no sweat, huh? We don’t think so!

Also, people really DO shop ’til they drop. Witness the horrendous incident at a Long Island WalMart where a crazed herd of bargain hunters trampled a low-wage WalMart employee in their stampede to get ….what?…more junk? Not only did these shopaholics kill the help, some of them were injured as well. Checkout Democracy Now!’s coverage HERE, but you’ll note the blame goes largely to WalMart. Hey! sure the retailer is guilty, but people don’t HAVE to act like a herd of mindless beasts! You’ve heard Rev. Billy on The Enviro Show, right? Stop the Shopocalypse!. It’s bad for people. It’s bad for the planet!

***********
Klimax Rocks the COP-15 Summit Site?

Activists from the Copenhagen based climate activist group KlimaX climbed onto
the front of the conference site Bella Centret and threw out banners. The site
is symbolic in the way that its the actual site of the COP15 summit exactly one
year from now.

“We need a humane solution to the climate crisis.” Says Sini Østergaard from
KlimaX “We cannot stand by and watch while the rich countries buy CO2 quotas
from the poor countries. We have take action now.”

The activists brought banners, music, cookies and tea while the security people
and diplomats attending a conference watched the fun.

“The clock is ticking and time has run out. It is now we have to face the
consequences of our over-consumption in the west.” says Thor from KlimaX.

The police arrived but didn’t bother anyone. The activists promises that
they’ll continue their actions in the run-up to and under the climate summit.
Already other actions are brewing for the immediate future.

Greetings Earthlings. It’s nest-fouling watch once again on the Enviro Show. Criket Attack!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from Al Gore (or Gore-al, as we like to say, sounding the alarm on Earth, rather than on Krypton): “You see that pale, blue dot? That’s us. Everything that has ever happened in all of human history, has happened on that pixel. All the triumphs and all the tragedies, all the wars all the famines, all the major advances… it’s our only home. And that is what is at stake, our ability to live on planet Earth, to have a future as a civilization. I believe this is a moral issue, it is your time to seize this issue, it is our time to rise again to secure our future.”

What’s that sound, Glen? When and will we be saved from the Bush regime?? Never mind us, when will all the endangered species be safe from these guys? You’re gonna’ love this one: Cleanup funding inadequate for Bush-designated marine monument. Maybe it’s fitting to leave all that plastic crap floating around George’s “monument”!

So, who IS the man behind the curtain on the John McSame campaign campaign trail? Could it be the man from Big Oil?? You can bet yur’ sweet crude it is!! In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we have a look at Bob Herbert’s op-ed piece in the New York Times, “An empty promise”. Our Enviro Show Blog Bonus is all about pain at the pump. Check it!

“It really isn’t garbage” by Pat Humphries takes us to our interview with Linda Hiesiger and Mike Fedora concerning the clever idea of putting a dump over one of Easthampton’s water supplies. Talk about planning ahead!

As noted in our recent post, it was the “The Summer Grab Bag Enviro Show” and believe me the bag was full to overflowin’. Thanks to everyone for making it run smoothly (except for that modulating volume of Tom Neilson’s call-in……no thanks to Verizon!).

Checkout our Enviro Show Blog for upcoming events concerning the planet. Next time we have a look at wolf reintroduction here in the Great Northeast. Can’t wait for Canis lupus denning up here in the hills. THAT should rattle a few Homo sapiens! Stay tuned!!

Greetings Earthlings. Time to declare our independence from the enemies of the planet. Tom Neilson puts on his roving reporter’s hat and phones in from the heartland to talk about the proposed dumping of coal ash on farm land (what a concept!). We have a peek at local clearcutting facilitated by the Commonwealth (in their infinite wisdom!) and, as always, we give you the Enviro Show Quote of the Week, a visit with Darth Cheney and the boy emperor (both of whom experienced some un-welcomed rebellion on July 4 ), but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Slug epidemic in the UK!

Since it’s the Grab Bag Enviro Show we thought we’d reference this past national holiday and the Bush regime’s schemes for more war with “Army Nation” by the Boston band, Girl on Top. That’ll take us to The Enviro Show Quote of the Week: A year ago, Barack Obama compared “the tyranny of oil” to that of Fascism saying, “The very resource that has fueled our way of life over the last hundred years now threatens to destroy it if our generation does not act now and act boldly.” We assume such bold action does not include making war on Iran. How about a War on Corporados?

There it is again! Glen, is it over now?? Looks like the boy emperor caught some flak on his July 4 visit to Tomas Jefferson’s house! Meanwhile, here in the birthplace of Independence, Darth Cheney got a similar reception on the Fourth of July. So much for the good news, on to the Bush regimes usual misdeeds, like for instance White House tries to keep EPA from showing how greenhouse gases could be regulated. And this, Former EPA official talks about White House’s unwillingness to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. No!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we take a look at all the clearcuts here in the Commonwealth with a visit to the ClearcutMA blog. Stumps don’t lie, folks. You have to see it to believe it!

Finally, it’s time to scope out the Bus Stop Billboard:

Thursday, July 10; 6:30pm. Friends of Southampton Greenway

July 27 – August 3, Northeast Climate Confluence: High Falls, NY
At the convergences there will be dozens of workshops and trainings,
networking opportunities, and strategy sessions aimed at building a
strong grassroots movement for climate justice. The convergences are
spaces not only to fight climate change but to throw off the yoke of
corporate control over our lives, working to build community controlled
alternatives to Wall Street and Washington. The convergences will be
models of the world we wish to live in, utilizing sustainable living
skills and consensus based decision making by all participants.

The convergences are also an opportunity to hone your direct action
skills and put them into, well, action. While creating sustainable
alternatives is important, indeed necessary, we must also continue to
confront those that are creating and profiting from the climate crisis.
Each climate convergence will culminate in an exciting and empowering
direct action taking on a different aspect of the climate crisis in each
region.

Whoa! D.O. telecommutes into the show from the hills of North Leverett; another Enviro Show first! Bad enough he burned up a shitload of fossil fuels coming in late from the Vineyard, he sure wasn’t gonna’ multiply his sins drivin’ that much further into Florence for half a show. O for an all-electric truck! (why not get Dad an all electric truck for father’s day!!).

We had a good chat with Prof. George Huber on just that subject….well, alternative fuel made from wood waste that is, right in his UMass lab! In the process of going on about gas we naturally took a piece out of Big Oil and their operatives in the White House. Did you catch Jim Page’s tune, “Petroleum Bonapart” that we played? Check it out here. Speaking of Darth Vader & the boy emperor, did you hear about that Supreme Court ruling upholding habeas corpus? Gosh, that’s soooo 17th century! Now Darth & George, et.al., might have their torture doctrine aired in court….in public! Toooo bad! O, and speaking of the White House and torture, have you read D.O.’s White House Torture Sonnets? (you won’t hear any of these on any community radio station poetry shows….not that he didn’t try pitchin’ it). Hopefully, it won’t be torture reading them, right??

Next Enviro Show it’s Jean & Glen on the horn with Chris Cuomo delving once more into the climate crisis. Sorry we ran out of time for the Bus Stop Billboard announcements. You can pick them up on our regular Enviro Show blog here. Tune in Tuesday, June 24 at 6:30pm and remember: listen to your Mother!!

Here’s that info from The Bus Stop Billboard we promised:

FLYER AT: http://a244.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/81/l_2ab548c3a3eb3bd5191ce5f967c84093.jpg

WHAT: Protest at homes of top financial supporters of Huntingdon Life
Sciences
WHEN: Saturday, May 31st, 2:00PM
WHERE: Wheeler’s Frozen Desserts, 334B Massachusetts Ave — near the
Symphony T Stop on the Green Line.
WHY: Huntingdon Life Sciences kills 500 animals every day, 180,000 animals
every year. Without the continued support of a small handful of
companies, Huntingdon will be forced to close their doors for good.
Huntingdon is already $100 million in debt, with no bank, no insurance
company, not even a sign outside the company. Learn more at http://www.shac.net/HLS/index.html.

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY! [in case the federales missed it! kidding!!]

The next Enviro Show is a mixed bag: Heidi Ricci from Mass Audubon calls in with the buzz on mosquito control and UMass Prof. George Huber joins us to talk about alternative gasoline made from
forestry & agricultural waste. Tell me we won’t pay $4 a gallon for THAT!

That’s it. Now remember: always listen to your Mother!!

From: African American Affairs Collective, Valley Free Radio
RE: Challenges and Recommendations
Date: Wednesday, August 02, 2006

It has been almost one year since Valley Free Radio has been on the air, and in light of our collective experience and expertise, we make the following challenges and/or recommendations to the Board:

* Enforcement of the Mission Statement and the Program Policies (as they currently read)
o Address violations of the MS, PP and/or other station rules, i.e., drinking on premises, leaving the station in a total mess, etc. (Immediately)
o Clarify station priorities and organize lines of communication with programmers, i.e., send to Programming Committee, update contact info and lists. (As soon as possible)
o Create a plan/model that will foster relationships between white and non-white programmers (by November??)
* Eliminate and/or mitigate competitive and hierarchical structures where possible
o Collective structure and organization
o Station Manager/officer issues
o Email/communication issues
* Board review of programs and schedule
o Survey programs produced by non-whites and whites
+ Develop recommendations, based on this review, to the Subcommittee on Scheduling or whatever body is responsible for revising and/or reviewing the schedule
+ Send recommendations to scheduling committee

Attention all VFR DJs: a special message from the programming committee.

Please note that each VFR DJ is responsible for volunteering at least two OFF AIR hours per month. Until now we have not been intentional about this aspect of the Program Policies. Volunteering two hours per month is a small yet significant way to contribute to the overall health and survival of Valley Free Radio. Your prompt attention to this matter is highly recommended. Beginning in August, each member will be expected to participate in OFF AIR volunteer activities. Missing more than two consecutive months shall result in the loss of ON AIR TIME.

Programmers will have the responsibility of logging volunteer hours and presenting their log to the Programming Committee.

VFR depends on volunteers to keep the station running and growing. We invite you to consider the following suggestions for volunteer activities:

Assisting/leading orientation

Acceptance/sorting program proposals

Being a collective liaison

Joining a working subcommittee

Adopting a committee task (could be done by a collective)

Maintaining the bulletin board in the studio

Making phone calls as follow-up to a meeting

Taking and transcribing meeting notes

Facilitating a programming or other committee or collective meeting

My name is Bill Weye, a member of the Web committee, and the person that is trying to design/program the new VFR Web site. As you can see, the site is not yet finished, but I wanted to both give you a preview of site features and some advice to VFR programmers about how they can best publicize their programs and VFR on the Web.

First, let me tell you about some of plans and possibilities for the new VFR Web site. In addition to a better looking and more developed design, in the not too distant future each collective will have the opportunity to create a Web page of their own, on which the collective can describe their programming. Even more exciting, a representative from each collective will be identified as a “contributor” and have access to edit their collective page.

If you think that’s exciting, I’ve got more good news: these same representatives will be able to write blog posts (you can see them on the site main page as “Latest News”). These posts will appear on both the main page and your collective page. The intention is to give collectives the ability to communicate directly with their audience on the Web and develop new listeners too. As the system is further developed, we’ll keep you informed.

On to my ideas for publicizing your programs . . . Some programs have already taken advantage of the power of the Web by starting their own Web sites. Programs like “Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child,” “Swimming with Sharks,” and “You’re Here” have already set-up their own Web site, which is terrific. If we have missed your program site, let us know.

Starting your own program site is great, but you don’t have to go that far to publicize your program on the Web. There are other ways to communicate the passion you have for your program and VFR — even if you’re a Luddite! For example:

have you ever thought of making your own business cards with program and VFR info? You can hand these cards out to potential listeners; it’s interesting the life just one business card can have.

how about including program info in your email signature?

if you don’t have the technical know-how to podcast, you could offer your listeners an archive of your shows on CD for cost.

if you frequent Web communities that might be potential listeners, don’t forget to mention your program when appropriate and put a link to VFR in your signature.

and you can create fliers (ol’ fashion paper!) and distribute them at events where your potential listeners might lurk.

Finally, just a couple of closing notes. We are not advocating that people spam, whether via the Web or posting 10 lbs. of fliers across the Valley. Also, the Web committee, like you, are volunteers; therefore, we can’t really do any of these projects for you, sorry.

The Web committee hopes you found these suggestions helpful; if you have any further suggestions that we might include in a future post, write an email to us. Thanks for spreading the word about VFR.
