On this edition of SRR we examine the proposal for a secular one-state that represents all of the people of historic Palestine. We also expose the heinous lies of pro-corporate opponents of the Employee Free Choice Act, including the glaring statistic that reveals the number of unfair labor practice filings with the National Labor Review Board against unions amounts to “only 42 cases of misconduct over seven decades—while there are nearly 30,000 unfair labor practices against workers by companies every year.” So much for “union intimidation”… We also commemorate the end of the first acquisition of state power by the working class, the Paris Commune, when it was violently suppressed in 1871.

Host Francesca Rheannon talks with Nicholson Baker about his acclaimed new book, HUMAN SMOKE: The Beginnings of World War II; The End of Civilization.
In a departure from his usual genre, fiction, Baker turns his eye for telling detail to an examination of the cavalier disregard for the human consequences of war by leaders on all sides of the conflict. We hear about how Churchill’s warmongering and Roosevelt’s anti-Semitism exacerbated the war’s civilian toll. We also hear of the courage of a few who dared to speak against the headlong rush to battle.

<itunes:summary>Host Francesca Rheannon talks with Nicholson Baker about his acclaimed new book, HUMAN SMOKE: The Beginnings of World War II; The End of Civilization.

–Leave us voicemail for the show at our new number, 1-877-363-0947, open 24 hours a day!

–Super Tuesday and primary results, including John McCain becoming the Republican frontrunner and the near-tie between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

–The five year anniversary of the infamous Colin Powell presentation before the war in Iraq, and White House Press Secretary Dana Perino’s comment on that anniversary.

–Is there too much similarity between Obama and Clinton’s positions for many voters?

–Mike Huckabee says the Republican primary is a two-man race, and thinks he’s one of those two men.

–Media figures are quickly questioning the authenticity of Hillary Clinton’s recent tears, the second recent incident.

–Chris Wallace again asks biased, leading questions, this time of Hillary Clinton, asking her why she is “so determined to declare defeat” in Iraq.

–Recent New York Times hire Bill Kristol says that “white women are a problem that we all live with” referring to the Democratic primary and Hillary Clinton’s candidacy.

–More biased questions about the Latino vote, a pundit calling this the first “affirmative action election,” and accusations that the Republican vote is being suppressed in New York.

–50 Cent’s presidential endorsement.

–Attorney General Michael Mukasey’s recent comments about waterboarding and torture, Senator Ted Kennedy’s questions to Mukasey, and the not-so-intelligent follow-up from pundits on Kennedy’s questions.

–David Pakman’s Irish talk radio appearance, and guest hosting on WHMP the next two weeks.

–Leave us voicemail for the show at our new number, 1-877-363-0947, open 24 hours a day!

–Barack Obama wins the South Carolina Democratic primary, Hillary Clinton and John McCain win the Florida primaries.

–John Edwards and Rudy Giuliani have dropped out of the presidential race.

–The mysterious Mitt Romney “whisper” incident during the recent MSNBC debate.

–President Bush’s last State of the Union address.

–Dick Morris’ recent comments implying John Edwards’ supporters are racist.

–Implications that because Hillary Clinton supports affirmative action, “she should give Barack Obama 5 percentage points because he’s black.”

–Plenty of false suggestions after the fact that Rudy Giuliani simply skipped the early primaries he lost.

–Mike Huckabee’s recent comments about WMD.

–Accusations that there is a “lovefest” between Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

–A strange statement from a pundit that Condi Rice as Vice-President could counter Barack Obama’s “ethnic excitement.”

–The John Gibson – Heath Ledger controversy.

This is also a test of sorts: the new podcasting features the web dude is working on, and an alternative way (telephone or Skype conferencing) for VFR committees to conduct meetings.

OPERATIONS COMMITTEE DRAFT NOTES

JAN 30, 2008

Present: Ed Russell[Tech Comm]; Bob Gutowski [Transmitter]; Bill Weye [Website] Tony Shannon [Fundraising, Board, Operations Coor], Bob Gardner [Operations Coord, Finance]; Jose Tolson [Station Managers], Fidel Hildalgo [Board]

No representatives present from: Programming, Training, Studio Committees.

Summary of discussion & decisions:

    * We will continue to meet via phone conference. Bill Weye recorded this session using Skype [internet phone technology]
* Since we were expecting the charges for this session to be in the range of $40-60, next time we will try doing a “Skype” option, where Bill will call each participant and link us. To this we will all need to notify him of what number we would like to be connected on.
* A key mandate for OC is to get volunteers plugged into work committees. To do this, we will need: a list of available people from programming, a list from each committee of how many people they need & what skills are required, and somebody(s) to be volunteer coordinators. Bob Gardner has some possible candidates to approach. Fidel has been working on surveying programmers for what they already are doing.; he will continue that work, and send OC a list of people and current tasks.
* We generally discussed the nature and mission of the Operations Committee and how it would operate. My sense from that discussion is that it will continue to be a communication vehicle, with most work being accomplished in member committees. Occasionally, tasks will be performed directly and/or problems addressed and resolutions found in these meetings.
