No, it’s not the manifestation of Bill O’Reilly’s “War against Christmas”, but hey, let’s talk about the Christian War against Pagans while we’re at it! Speaking of war, we’ll checkout that infamous warmonger Darth Cheney and his target practice dummy (btw, do not throw your shoes at the radio). As always, we’ll peek into The Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the news of the day and give you the Quote of the week, but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! There’s that theme again! So Glen, how long before Darth & the boy emperor have to hang their stockings somewhere else? As you may have heard, W has been very naughty: he’s endangered the polar bears. Santa will not be pleased!

That heartwarming tune, “All I want for Christmas is to impeach the President” takes us to the Enviro Show Echo Chamber where there’s good news to report (finally!), three dams are to be taken out on the Klamath River in Oregon and California (you see, it’s not all gloom & doom). Congrats to everyone who overcame the forces of the dark side. We’ve been doing the Bush Countdown on The Enviro Show since VFR came on the air over three years ago. Now, with only weeks to go before Darth Cheney and the boy emperor slip into the dustbin of history (unless, of course, some “event” requires them to declare marshal law and suspend the Constitution), we can finally see the light at the end of the long, long tunnel. And guess what: the light we see is not an oncoming train! No, it’s the light of hope; something we almost lost during the Bush era.

BUT, Darth, the boy emperor and their gruesome robo-fascist supporters are working overtime to destroy all the environmental and social safeguards that remain after eight years of Repugnican gutting. There is plenty of work still to do before the transition AND there will be lots more work during the Obama era to make sure folks in DC do as we try to do……which is: LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER!

As we all know by now, the Bush regime wants Congress to give his administration $700 billion dollars to bailout Wall Street, but did you know that the White House blocked the states when they tried to stop predatory lending? Of course we love the blame-game when it comes to the corporados, but how about solutions? Thom Hartmann, Friends of the Earth and others have proposed that a Tobin-style tax on stock trading, options, futures, swaps, and currency trading should be introduced to curb excessive speculation and promote longer-term investing that serves the real economy. Tobin-style tax revenue could be used to help pay for the bailout and address critical social and environmental needs. AND our Enviro Show Blog special Sarah Barracuda’s dead lake.

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber Grist asks: Is the financial crisis more dire than the climate crisis? And this: Response to financial crisis must address climate crisis too. We thought the Repugnicans were God-fearing folk! Drugs? Sex? Graft and corruption? We are shocked, shocked we say!

We’ll be taking a look at these usual suspects and their planet trashing and we’ll hearing from Stan Cox, author of “Sick Planet”. The website says: “Sick Planet tells nine stories in which the global capitalist economy turns the well-intentioned efforts of humanity inside-out. By the tenth chapter, it will be clear that neither organic chicken soup nor full medical coverage can cure what ails this planet.” Of course, we’ll have some news and views and maybe The Enviro Show Quote of the Week, but first it’s time for….Revenge of the Critters! Moveon.org has put the…um..sunlight? onto the McSame campaign’s cozy relationship with Big Oil. Why do you think he wants to open up our shorelines to oil drilling? Could it be the $1 million dollar campaign contribution Big Oil laid on McSame just days after he flip-flopped on offshore drilling? Ha! Yes, Big Oil not only wants to wreck our coastlines in their endless pursuit of profits, and wreck your pocketbook as well, they also have no compunction about destroying the biosphere while they’re at it! Say, did we mention BOYCOTT EXXON/MOBIL? ALSO, for our Enviro Show Blog Bonus go to NRDC to Take Action (so to speak) on coastal oil drilling. Don’t be fooled by Bush’s BS about coastal drilling somehow lowering gas prices. That oil won’t come in for years, even if it did makes sense to drill there. Big Oil has unused drilling leases all over the map that it’s just sitting on while they take YOU for a ride on the suckermobile!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber arch enemy of the Earth, Sen. Ted Stevens gets nailed for lying about taking gifts from Big Oil. What? Corrupt politicians in Washington taking bribes from Big Oil?? Surprise! Also, from the Amherst Bulletin we learn that the Gov (in his infinite wisdom) has vetoed a bond that would have funded repairs to the Lake Wyola dam in Shutesbury. You know, the dam that’s threatening to fail and send most of the lake into the Sawmill River along whose banks numerous houses sit…..like D.O.’s. ALSO, from Grist some 420,000 gallons of fuel oil spilled into the Mississippi River early Wednesday, after a 600-foot chemical tanker collided with a fuel barge. Nice driving guys!

There’s that chilling sound again! Glen, is there some way out of here? When will Darth, the boy emperor and their lackeys be banished? O, by the way, it seems someone high up in The Empire has been leaning on EPA staffers not to talk to….well, ANYONE! Was it just Stephen Johnson or was it more edicts from the Dark Lord? Only time will tell!! Meanwhile, Four Democratic senators last Tuesday called for Stephen Johnson to resign as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and asked Attorney General Michael Mukasey to begin an investigation into whether he lied in testimony to a Senate committee. Mukasey investigate? We don’t think so!

Just back from taking down posters for the VFR B-day Benefit that we canceled due to scheduling conflicts at Look Park (yes, the same posters i put up last week!). Toooooo bad, but since this enviro is a noted serial party pooper (prone to lurking on the outskirts of crowds or just plain not showing up) it actually works out for me. BTW, not all enviros are misanthropes, don’t get me wrong. Just because the human race is destroying the biosphere why should we hold it against our friends and neighbors, right? Some of my best friends may have four legs (or two legs and two wings, or eight legs even), but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate a well trained human being now and then ya’ know.

So our last show came off pretty much on plan (if you exclude my opening gaff w/the DN! psa, and the Emengency Broadcast System interruption, and Tom Neilson not calling in, and the abbreviated Darth Cheney and Bus Stop Billboard segments, and the tragic loss of our circa 1980s tiny plastic laugh box…..hmmm, let’s see, is there anything else?). I believe we also had the honor to be the last VFR show to play the B-day Benefit PSA before it was summarily dumped from the stacks, proving once again that you can rely on your friends at the Enviro Show to air news that no longer exists. We plan to do better in the future. And speaking of the future, our next show is The Reptilian Enviro Show (which is not to say we are groveling, debased, or despicable like Websters Unabridged says!). Things that slither about will be a definite focus, and I don’t just mean Darth Cheney and the boy emperor. So tune in August 5th at 6:30pm; same bat channel, same bat time!

That will go exactly nowhere since there’s also a congressional ban (though Cape Wind proponents might like the sight of more trashed coastlines!….sorry, couldn’t resist). Luckily Barbra Boxer and Nancy Pelosi are digging in their high heels. Here’s the Enviro Show Blog Bonus: Dig your heels in too!. Did you catch the emperor’s farewell “joke” at the G8? He said to his fellow leaders: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.” The rightwing flat-earth robos loved it. Gaia, help rid us of this plague!!

That’ll take us to The Enviro Show Quote of the Week: A year ago, Barack Obama compared “the tyranny of oil” to that of Fascism saying, “The very resource that has fueled our way of life over the last hundred years now threatens to destroy it if our generation does not act now and act boldly.” We assume such bold action does not include making war on Iran. You make the turn after shooting a 48 and polishing off two dogs and a six pack of the Beast, when out of nowhere a tree attacks your golf cart!” One of the occupants had his leg impaled by the tree they rammed on what was believed to be drunk driving in the rough.. Hey, no one ever said there’s no such thing as payback! Get a clue: golf courses are part of the problem!

The trail is steep in spots, so wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes. Bring a bag lunch, a hand lens if you have one, a favorite field guide or two, and perhaps a pair of binoculars in case we spot any eagles. Limited to 15 participants. Whoa! D.O. telecommutes into the show from the hills of North Leverett; another Enviro Show first! Bad enough he burned up a shitload of fossil fuels coming in late from the Vineyard, he sure wasn’t gonna’ multiply his sins drivin’ that much further into Florence for half a show. O for an all-electric truck! (why not get Dad an all electric truck for father’s day!!).

We had a good chat with Prof. George Huber on just that subject….well, alternative fuel made from wood waste that is, right in his UMass lab! In the process of going on about gas we naturally took a piece out of Big Oil and their operatives in the White House. Did you catch Jim Page’s tune, “Petroleum Bonapart” that we played? Check it out here. Speaking of Darth Vader & the boy emperor, did you hear about that Supreme Court ruling upholding habeas corpus? Gosh, that’s soooo 17th century! Now Darth & George, et.al., might have their torture doctrine aired in court….in public! Toooo bad! O, and speaking of the White House and torture, have you read D.O.’s White House Torture Sonnets? (you won’t hear any of these on any community radio station poetry shows….not that he didn’t try pitchin’ it). Hopefully, it won’t be torture reading them, right??

Greetings Earthlings. Jean’s back! Hopefully she’ll have a report from the front lines. We return to the scene of the crime with another look at fossil fuels and what’s out there to replace them. Professor George Huber, researcher at UMass Amherst’s Chemical Engineering Department joins us in the studio for a look at biofuels that don’t eat up the crops. As always, we’ll checkout the Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the latest news on the environment, and we’ll see what Darth Cheney and the boy emperor are up to, as well as give you the quote of the week, but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Sheep attacks car! OK fans, talk about a Dodge Ram. How about a VW Ram? This is a see-it-to-believe-it video version of Revenge of the Critters. An Enviro Show blog exclusive!

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we celebrate the end of the road for the Hummer. Toooo bad! Instead, according to the Washington Post, Travelers are turning to public transportation. Meanwhile, the International Herald Tribune tells us bike sales are up. AND this from Reuters: Pact needed to save biofuels (what? Crops for food, not for fuel? How last year is that??) AND finally, though we’re not big Thomas Friedman fans, we can’t help but echo some of the sentiment he expressed in this piece in his New York Times column.

There it is again! That god-awful theme music. Glen, tell us when it’s FINALLY over! This just in: In a report long delayed by partisan squabbling, the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday accused President Bush and Vice President Cheney of taking the country to war in Iraq by exaggerating evidence of links between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda. SURPRIZE! Also, Bush regime crony says goal for rich countries to curb greenhouse gases are ”frankly not do-able for us”. No? Did you check that with Darth?

Speaking of Darth and the boy emperor,“Petroleum Bonapart” by Jim Page, longtime enviro troubadour, takes us to our interview with George Huber. Word has it that his daughter will be sitting in with us so we’ll try to behave like adults……maybe.

Toxics Action will be giving a presentation on Zero Waste in the Social Room of the Unitarian Society, 220 Main Street, Northampton (please walk down the driveway and use right side door, the meeting is downstairs). The proposed Northampton Regional Landfill expansion over the Barnes aquifer threatens the public drinking water supply in our area. If it goes forward, it would exempt a landfill in a Water Supply Protection District for the first time in Massachusetts.
