Greetings Earthlings. We celebrate the Return of the Sun with Cassie and Winifred of Awentree in Easthampton. No, it’s not the manifestation of Bill O’Reilly’s “War against Christmas”, but hey, let’s talk about the Christian War against Pagans while we’re at it! Speaking of war, we’ll checkout that infamous warmonger Darth Cheney and his target practice dummy (btw, do not throw your shoes at the radio). As always, we’ll peek into The Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the news of the day and give you the Quote of the week, but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Santa attacked by bobcat in Jersey!

There’s that theme again! So Glen, how long before Darth & the boy emperor have to hang their stockings somewhere else? As you may have heard, W has been very naughty: he’s endangered the polar bears. Santa will not be pleased!

That heartwarming tune, “All I want for Christmas is to impeach the President” takes us to the Enviro Show Echo Chamber where there’s good news to report (finally!), three dams are to be taken out on the Klamath River in Oregon and California (you see, it’s not all gloom & doom). Having said that, the Amazon? Not so much. AND this: Obama’s pick of Ken Salazar for Interior Secretary gets mixed reviews. ALSO, another Enviro Show Video Blog Special, this one for the holidays!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from Jonathan Swift: “We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.”

The Pagans & the Christians” by Dar Williams takes us to our interview with…..the pagans!

Then it’s on to the Bus Stop Billboard for a brief perusal:

Saturday, January 10. Washington, DC or…? Keep Winter Cold Polar Bear Plunge. We chose this date because the newly-elected U.S. Congress will be returning to Capitol Hill around this time.
We’ll go out with “The holidays are here and we’re still at war” by Brett Dennen. Can you belive this?? Next time it’s the wonderful world of run-off. Until then remember: listen to your Mother!

Greetings Earthlings. It’s a proposed landfill expansion hootenanny! Mary Serreze, whose recent piece in The Valley Advocate about Zero Waste and the dump issue, joins us to ask the musical question: Does your water taste funny when your neighbors dump on it? Also, we look deep into the darkness with Darth Cheney and the boy emperor. We’ll checkout The Enviro Show Echo Chamber and the Quote of the Week, but first it’s time for… Revenge of the Critters! Shark attacks boy….in his bedroom!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from author, Susan Griffin: “The part of the mind that is dark to us in this culture, that is sleeping in us, that we name ‘unconscious’, is the knowledge that we are inseparable from all other beings in the universe”.

There’s the Darth Cheney fanfare again! Glen! Tell us it’s over NOW!! When do Darth Cheney and his little sock puppet exit stage right? We’ve been talking these past few weeks about all the ecological damage these enemies of the planet are doing on their way out the door. Last time we delved into the top 100 Bush regime rollbacks. Now add this one: their vile minions in the EPA have finalized rules that will make it easier for mountaintop mining companies to dump their waste near rivers and streams.

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we pile on DC insiders Environmental Defense along with our friends from Rising Tide over that carbon trading scam you keep hearing about. Also, did Big Auto really earn that loan? AND, Obama embraces Big Oil with the James Jones pick.

Then, live from the luxurious Pine Street Studios of WXOJ-LP it’s Mary Serreze and the Zero Waste Valley Band! After Mary rocks the walls we’ll have a chat about this concept of putting a dump over an aquifer. Is that living better through chemistry??

Then it’s on to the Bus Stop Billboard:

Tuesday, December 9 at 8 PM. Talk to Bill McKibben and Michael Brune about Global Warming. Prepare for an earnest and lively discussion with RAN Executive Director Michael Brune and writer-activist Bill McKibben, followed by a Q & A the steps we need to take collectively to free our country and our world of fossil fuels. You can remind Bill that Cape Wind is the privatization of the Commons! Just call: 1-866-864-8698 And type in the passcode: 1051283210

Thurday, December 11, 6pm. Home Depot “Grand Opening” sprawl teach-in. Food for Thought Books, Amherst. Scheduled speakers so far include Emily Kawano (populareconomics.org), Jeff Lacey (Shutes Planning Board and professional planner, who will project some great slides on the wall). We’ll be approaching the issue from the same diversity of perspectives that worked so nicely for the wal-mart campaign: local economy, downtowns, employers, domestic workers, sweatshops abroad, students, seniors, environmentalists, cyclists, etc. For info call: 413 549 1193

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber the BIG news is DINGELL’S OUT! The Congressman from Big Auto gets towed!! The Waxman is in! Also, Obama on climate change. You’ll note he doesn’t use the term “climate crisis”. There’s only a “financial crisis”. Tell that to the south sea islanders and the polar bears! Also, That One is talking cap & trade, he’s talking nukes, “clean” coal (groan). Say it ain’t so, O! Finally, Dems boot Lieberman from Environment Committee (how’s THAT for Joe-mentum! What? you want MORE punishment for Traitor Joe?

Brrr! It ain’t just the cold that makes us shiver. Glen! Tell us it’s over soon!! Darth Cheney and the boy emperor have trashed years worth of environmental protection. Will Obama reverse the worse 100 Bush regime rollbacks? Sign the petition. OK, last time we told you about the Bush regime’s 11th hour move for more wolf slaughter out west, right? It’s time to TAKE ACTION! There’s only a few more days to get your comments to U.S. Fish & Wildlife (of course, you COULD deliver your comments in-person to their office on Rt. 9 in Hadley behind Staples, maybe along with….what? some theatrics? IF you wanted to).

The Enviro Show Quote of the day is a variation on our theme, it comes from Albert Einstein: “The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking, and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophes”

“The Great Unknown” by Dar Williams from “The Honesty Room” takes us to our interview with Randy Kehler. We’ll open up the phone lines……ok, so there’s only one line..so you listeners can get in on the conversation.

The tune “We are everywhere” by Dave Rovics reminds us that OK, so YES, WE DID! We did finally show the door to the Repugnicans, BUT there’s still weeks to go before they get dragged out that White House door, and even then we have to ask: how much does Obama owe to the corporados? Let’s hear from some Enviro Show listeners. Give us a call at (413)585-1033 and let know your thoughts: will an Obama Administration put the corporados in their place? Soooo, we continue to celebrate the light at the end of this loooong dark tunnel, but we remain vigilant as to just who has Barack Obama’s ear.

Glen! When does the Obama bouncer toss Darth & the boy emperor out the door? AND, what sort of damage can THE WORST ADMINISTRATION EVER do to the planet before they’re finally gone? Here’s one take: “Bush administration prepares environmental messes for the next prez”. AND this: “Bush admin to open almost 360,000 acres of Utah public lands to drilling”. If time allows, we’ll run through a list of other Repugnican enemies of the Earth, members of the League of Conservation Voters’ “Dirty Dozen”, that voters threw out of Congress last Tuesday.

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week naturally goes back to last Tuesday when Barack Obama spoke to tens of thousands gathered in Chicago after his victory at the polls:

“This is our moment. This is our time – to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth – that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes We Can.”

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we checkout Worcester Telegram on how our Forests, parks need friends. ALSO, New law protects old-growth in N.Y. Forests. AND, this from RAN: Rainforests and agriculture.

Then it’s time for our conversation with Chris Matera. Did you know there was clearcutting of our public forests in the Quabbin and on the Montague Plains? You can see the photos here on Chris’ blog.

And guess what: the light we see is not an oncoming train! No, it’s the light of hope; something we almost lost during the Bush era.

BUT, Darth, the boy emperor and their gruesome robo-fascist supporters are working overtime to destroy all the environmental and social safeguards that remain after eight years of Repugnican gutting. There is plenty of work still to do before the transition AND there will be lots more work during the Obama era to make sure folks in DC do as we try to do……which is: LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER!

On a side note: we have copies of D.O.’s poetry pocketbook, “The White House Torture Sonnets” available as a fundraiser for VFR. You can pick-up copies at your favorite co-op or book store soon. If you’d like a copy mailed to you send us an email at enviroshow@valleyfreeradio.org

OK, time to party!!

Greetings Earthlings. Another good reason to use a bike! <p>

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from Ed Abbey: “Hierarchical institutions are like giant bulldozers–obedient to the whim of any fool who takes the controls.”
Very timely, no? Go Ed! <p>

OK, Glen, hasn’t this gone on long enough? How long before they’re gone anyway? How much more damage can they do?? As we all know by now, the Bush regime wants Congress to give his administration $700 billion dollars to bailout Wall Street, but did you know that the White House <a href=”http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/13/AR2008021302783.html”> blocked the states</a> when they tried to stop predatory lending? Of course we love the blame-game when it comes to the corporados, but how about solutions? Thom Hartmann, Friends of the Earth and others have proposed that a Tobin-style tax on stock trading, options, futures, swaps, and currency trading should be introduced to curb excessive speculation and promote longer-term investing that serves the real economy. Tobin-style tax revenue could be used to help pay for the bailout and address critical social and environmental needs. AND our Enviro Show Blog special <a href=”http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/09/19/palin/print.html”>Sarah Barracuda’s dead lake</a>. <p>

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber <a href=”http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2008/9/22/141945/706”>Grist</a> asks: Is the financial crisis more dire than the climate crisis? And this: <a href=”http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/sep/23/climatechange.carboncapturestorage?gusrc=rss&feed=politics”>Response to financial crisis must address climate crisis too</a>. O, and get THIS, Gore-Al is advocating <a href="http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/24/gores-call-to-action/">civil disobedience</a> in response to the climate crisis! Whoa, Al! Why didn’t you think of that eight years ago in Florida?? <p>

Let’s checkout what’s posted on the Bus Stop Billboard:

Greetings Earthlings. We’ve been focusing on the communities health here lately with regard to the proposed expansion of the Northampton dump over the Barnes Aquifer and tonight we’ll be hearing from author/activist, Jeff Conant whose recent book “A Community Guide to Environmental Health” seems right up our alley. As always we’ll be checking in on Darth Cheney, the boy emperor, John McSame and Sarah Barracuda (all prime suspects in an organized criminal enterprise disguised as a political party). We’ll checkout some news on the Enviro Show Eco Chamber and have the Quote of the Week, but first it’s time for…Revenge of the Critters! Deer attacks hunter and lawn chair!

Greetings Earthlings.
Glen? Is it safe to come out yet? Will we ever be rid of the Bush regime? What if John McSame & Caribou Barbie steal the election? Will the Dark Lord continue his rein? We posted the candidates enviro programs on the Indymedia Climate site. Suffice it to say, the McSame/Palin plan is looking….how shall we say? Malnourished? Are we surprised that Grampy McSame (pssst, he’s crazy) failed to mention the climate crisis during his acceptance speech at the RNC? They did however have a group chant: “drill baby, drill!” (is this a Hollywood movie we’re in??). We can’t make this stuff up! Once again we find ourselves quoting Thomas Friedman (sorry) who hits the nail on the head regarding McSame: “John McCain has completed his makeover from the greenest Republican to run for president to just another representative of big oil”. (Thomas must’ve been listening to our show!) ALSO, that’s the Bush regime’s Minerals Management Service that was caught with their pants down recently. We thought the Repugnicans were God-fearing folk! Drugs? Sex? Graft and corruption? We are shocked, shocked we say!

“The American War” by Simone White takes us to The Enviro Show Quote of the Week which comes from former president Dwight Eisenhower. This is in recognition of Hurricane Ike and the warmongering comments of the Repugnican Vice Presidential candidate with regard to Russia. We’ll hear it in Ike’s own words.

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we checkout Climate Indymedia for a report on the Biotechnology Industry designing nightmare biofuels. AND, speaking of nightmares, checkout this bone-chilling video for our Enviro Show Blog Bonus. Greetings Earthlings. Time to turn our collective back on King Coal; Big Nuke; Big Hydro & Big Wind and see about generating our own power. Yes, it’s home utilities hour with our friend Brad Compton who lives out in the woods a good distance from power lines and the grip of corporate America. We’ll open up the phone lines if you have any questions about living independently here in the alleged Land of Liberty. As always we’ll checkout The Enviro Show Echo Chamber and the dastardly deeds of Darth Cheney and the boy emperor. Also, the Quote of the Week and the Bus Stop Billboard, but first it’s time for…..Revenge of the Critters! A Repugnican National Convention Special. In Palermo, Sicily the skies have been raining rats. Rodents that otherwise leap from rooftop to rooftop in the rundown center of Sicily’s capital, had grown too fat to jump and were plummeting to the streets, sometimes hitting passersby below. Warning, this could happen in the Twin Cities!

Rodents that otherwise leap from rooftop to rooftop in the rundown center of Sicily’s capital, had grown too fat to jump and were plummeting to the streets, sometimes hitting passersby below. Warning, this could happen in the Twin Cities!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week is in keeping with the independence theme of this show. It comes from none other than Thomas Jefferson, who knew a bit about democracy and independence:
“I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever, in religion, in philosophy, in politics or in anything else, where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to Heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all.”
Also, this election year bonus from Jefferson: “A politician looks forward only to the next election. A statesman looks forward to the next generation.”

Brrr! What’s that sudden chill, Glen? How long before it’s gone?? Last time we spoke about the Bush regime’s assault on the Endangered Species Act. We’re asking our listeners to ACT NOW on this critical issue. There’s only a few weeks before the deadline on comments to the U.S. Department of Interior (for what that’s worth!). Also, let’s set the record straight on Darth Cheney’s myth about China drilling for oil off the Cuban coast. The Dark Lord finds no fabrication too extreme in his crazed quest for oil and profit.

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we read that going veggie can reduce your carbon footprint. And, the AP tells us the bad news that Arctic sea ice drops to second lowest level on record. Criket Attack!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from Al Gore (or Gore-al, as we like to say, sounding the alarm on Earth, rather than on Krypton): “You see that pale, blue dot? That’s us. Everything that has ever happened in all of human history, has happened on that pixel. All the triumphs and all the tragedies, all the wars all the famines, all the major advances… it’s our only home. And that is what is at stake, our ability to live on planet Earth, to have a future as a civilization. I believe this is a moral issue, it is your time to seize this issue, it is our time to rise again to secure our future.”

What’s that sound, Glen? When and will we be saved from the Bush regime?? Never mind us, when will all the endangered species be safe from these guys? You’re gonna’ love this one: Cleanup funding inadequate for Bush-designated marine monument. Maybe it’s fitting to leave all that plastic crap floating around George’s “monument”!

So, who IS the man behind the curtain on the John McSame campaign campaign trail? Could it be the man from Big Oil?? You can bet yur’ sweet crude it is!! In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we have a look at Bob Herbert’s op-ed piece in the New York Times, “An empty promise”. Our Enviro Show Blog Bonus is all about pain at the pump. Check it!

“It really isn’t garbage” by Pat Humphries takes us to our interview with Linda Hiesiger and Mike Fedora concerning the clever idea of putting a dump over one of Easthampton’s water supplies. Talk about planning ahead!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week:
“In Wildness is the preservation of the World. Every tree sends its fibres forth in search of the Wild. The cities import it at any price. Men plow and sail for it. From the forest and wilderness come the tonics and barks which brace mankind. Our ancestors were savages. The story of Romulus and Remus being suckled by a wolf is not a meaningless fable. The founders of every State which has risen to eminence have drawn their nourishment and vigor from a similar wild source. It was because the children of the Empire were not suckled by the wolf that they were conquered and displaced by the children of the Northern forests who were.” – H.D. Thoreau

Hear that sound, dear listeners? It’s the Wicked Witch of the West, spokeswoman for Big Oil and Repugnican candidate for Prez, John McSame (same as it ever was!). And speaking of McSame, you absolutely MUST checkout the video clip we’ve linked to on our Enviro Show blog. Moveon.org has put the…um..sunlight? onto the McSame campaign’s cozy relationship with Big Oil. Why do you think he wants to open up our shorelines to oil drilling? Could it be the $1 million dollar campaign contribution Big Oil laid on McSame just days after he flip-flopped on offshore drilling? Ha! Yes, Big Oil not only wants to wreck our coastlines in their endless pursuit of profits, and wreck your pocketbook as well, they also have no compunction about destroying the biosphere while they’re at it! Say, did we mention BOYCOTT EXXON/MOBIL? ALSO, for our Enviro Show Blog Bonus go to NRDC to Take Action (so to speak) on coastal oil drilling. Don’t be fooled by Bush’s BS about coastal drilling somehow lowering gas prices. That oil won’t come in for years, even if it did makes sense to drill there. Big Oil has unused drilling leases all over the map that it’s just sitting on while they take YOU for a ride on the suckermobile!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber arch enemy of the Earth, Sen. Ted Stevens gets nailed for lying about taking gifts from Big Oil. What? Corrupt politicians in Washington taking bribes from Big Oil?? Surprise! Also, from the Amherst Bulletin we learn that the Gov (in his infinite wisdom) has vetoed a bond that would have funded repairs to the Lake Wyola dam in Shutesbury. You know, the dam that’s threatening to fail and send most of the lake into the Sawmill River along whose banks numerous houses sit…..like D.O.’s. ALSO, from Grist some 420,000 gallons of fuel oil spilled into the Mississippi River early Wednesday, after a 600-foot chemical tanker collided with a fuel barge. Nice driving guys!

There’s that chilling sound again! Glen, is there some way out of here? When will Darth, the boy emperor and their lackeys be banished? O, by the way, it seems someone high up in The Empire has been leaning on EPA staffers not to talk to….well, ANYONE! Was it just Stephen Johnson or was it more edicts from the Dark Lord? Only time will tell!! Meanwhile, Four Democratic senators last Tuesday called for Stephen Johnson to resign as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and asked Attorney General Michael Mukasey to begin an investigation into whether he lied in testimony to a Senate committee. Mukasey investigate? We don’t think so!

“Heal the Earth”, by Girl on Top takes us to our interview with Stan Cox. Then, as always, it’s on to the Bus Stop Billboard (looks mighty thin this week):

Just back from taking down posters for the VFR B-day Benefit that we canceled due to scheduling conflicts at Look Park (yes, the same posters i put up last week!).
So our last show came off pretty much on plan (if you exclude my opening gaff w/the DN! psa, and the Emengency Broadcast System interruption, and Tom Neilson not calling in, and the abbreviated Darth Cheney and Bus Stop Billboard segments, and the tragic loss of our circa 1980s tiny plastic laugh box…..hmmm, let’s see, is there anything else?). I believe we also had the honor to be the last VFR show to play the B-day Benefit PSA before it was summarily dumped from the stacks, proving once again that you can rely on your friends at the Enviro Show to air news that no longer exists. We plan to do better in the future. And speaking of the future, our next show is The Reptilian Enviro Show (which is not to say we are groveling, debased, or despicable like Websters Unabridged says!). Things that slither about will be a definite focus, and I don’t just mean Darth Cheney and the boy emperor. So tune in August 5th at 6:30pm; same bat channel, same bat time!

Greetings Earthlings. It’s Koyanaskatsi, a world out of balance, thanks to industrialized human-centric society, but hey, we can evolve right?? Umm….right? Re-wilding, or reintroducing displaced species may be part of the solution. We have a conversation with Rob Edward, Carnivore Recovery Director for WildEarth Guardians. Of course we’ll always find time to bash Bush and the Empire, and checkout The Enviro Show Echo Chamber and Quote of the Week, as well as a call from Tom Neilson out on the road, but first it’s time for….Revenge of the Critters! We jump into the Wayback Machine for a tale of man and wolf.

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from the dean of enviro thought, Aldo Leopold from the essay “Thinking like a mountain”: “The cowman who cleans his range of wolves does not realize that he is taking over the wolf’s job of trimming the herd to fit the range. He has not learned to think like a mountain. Hence we have dustbowls, and rivers washing the future into the sea.” Ahmen!

Los Lobos’ “Will the Wolf Survive?” takes us to the Enviro Show Echo Chamber where we revisit the Boston Globe story about the Gray wolf that was killed in Shelburne last March. This sorry incident is what led us to do this week’s show on wolf reintroduction. We also checkout the Restore the North Woods website and the latest on Northeast wolf reintroduction from the Maine Wolf Coalition. You can meet some LIVE reps from the wolf community right here in the Commonwealth, by the way. Checkout Wolf Hollow in Ipswich. Then we read from the Daily Hampshire Gazette’s coverage of the recent event concerning the Northampton landfill expansion proposal.

It’s that Darth Cheney dirge again! When will it end!! Glen, what’s the count? How many days?? Of course you’ve heard Darth and the boy emperor want to drill their way out of the gas crisis (a scam within a scam within a scam…these guys are the worst!). Bush says he’ll lift the ban on offshore drilling signed by his father. That will go exactly nowhere since there’s also a congressional ban (though Cape Wind proponents might like the sight of more trashed coastlines!….sorry, couldn’t resist). Luckily Barbra Boxer and Nancy Pelosi are digging in their high heels. Here’s the Enviro Show Blog Bonus: Dig your heels in too!. Did you catch the emperor’s farewell “joke” at the G8? He said to his fellow leaders: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.” The rightwing flat-earth robos loved it. Gaia, help rid us of this plague!!

Greetings Earthlings. Time to declare our independence from the enemies of the planet. Tom Neilson puts on his roving reporter’s hat and phones in from the heartland to talk about the proposed dumping of coal ash on farm land (what a concept!). We have a peek at local clearcutting facilitated by the Commonwealth (in their infinite wisdom!) and, as always, we give you the Enviro Show Quote of the Week, a visit with Darth Cheney and the boy emperor (both of whom experienced some un-welcomed rebellion on July 4 ), but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Slug epidemic in the UK!

Since it’s the Grab Bag Enviro Show we thought we’d reference this past national holiday and the Bush regime’s schemes for more war with “Army Nation” by the Boston band, Girl on Top. That’ll take us to The Enviro Show Quote of the Week: A year ago, Barack Obama compared “the tyranny of oil” to that of Fascism saying, “The very resource that has fueled our way of life over the last hundred years now threatens to destroy it if our generation does not act now and act boldly.” We assume such bold action does not include making war on Iran. How about a War on Corporados?

There it is again! Glen, is it over now?? Looks like the boy emperor caught some flak on his July 4 visit to Tomas Jefferson’s house! Meanwhile, here in the birthplace of Independence, Darth Cheney got a similar reception on the Fourth of July. So much for the good news, on to the Bush regimes usual misdeeds, like for instance White House tries to keep EPA from showing how greenhouse gases could be regulated. And this, Former EPA official talks about White House’s unwillingness to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. No!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we take a look at all the clearcuts here in the Commonwealth with a visit to the ClearcutMA blog. Stumps don’t lie, folks. You have to see it to believe it!

Finally, it’s time to scope out the Bus Stop Billboard:

At the convergences there will be dozens of workshops and trainings,
networking opportunities, and strategy sessions aimed at building a
strong grassroots movement for climate justice. The convergences are
spaces not only to fight climate change but to throw off the yoke of
corporate control over our lives, working to build community controlled
alternatives to Wall Street and Washington. The convergences will be
models of the world we wish to live in, utilizing sustainable living
skills and consensus based decision making by all participants.

The convergences are also an opportunity to hone your direct action
skills and put them into, well, action. While creating sustainable
alternatives is important, indeed necessary, we must also continue to
confront those that are creating and profiting from the climate crisis.
Each climate convergence will culminate in an exciting and empowering
direct action taking on a different aspect of the climate crisis in each
region.

Greetings Earthlings. We return to the subject of the climate crisis once again, this time we head north with a call-in from Chris Cuomo on the impact of climate change to native Alaskans. This week we take a little more time delving into the sins of Darth Cheney and the boy emperor, as well as the presumed successor to the throne, John McSame. We’ll give you the Enviro Show Quote of the Week and stop off at the Bus Stop Billboard (this time we’ll take time to read the notices), but first it’s time for……

Revenge of the Critters! Tree attacks golf cart! It was another one of those days on the links in Minnesota. One golfer says: “I’ve seen this happen time and time again. You make the turn after shooting a 48 and polishing off two dogs and a six pack of the Beast, when out of nowhere a tree attacks your golf cart!” One of the occupants had his leg impaled by the tree they rammed on what was believed to be drunk driving in the rough.. Hey, no one ever said there’s no such thing as payback! Get a clue: golf courses are part of the problem!

Here’s our Quote of the Week:
“What is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?”
– Henry David Thoreau

There it is again! What’s the Bush regime countdown now?? Speaking of the Dark Lord, it seems Cheney wants to drill for oil everywhere! Naturally, the boy emperor (and his would be successor) couldn’t help but….err..pipe up about it? Then, as if by plan (hmmm…) the emperor from Big Oil tries coercing Dems into opening our coastlines to Big Oil, effectively blaming Dems for the high price of oil! Is anyone stupid enough to believe him?? Big Oil already has thousands of unused leases and idle wells in the U.S.! AND, of course, the Repugnicans in Congress already showed their true colors on climate change the week before Darth, the emperor, and John McSame began their latest surge for Big Oil. Did we mention that crazy John McSame wants to build 45 new nukes by 2030?

Here’s the Enviro Show Blog Bonus: checkout this video about how Big Oil fuels McSame’s not so Straight Talk Express!

The tune “Excuse me your planet is burning” by Andy Vine takes us to our interview with Chris.

Duct taped to the Bus Stop Billboard we find:

Wednesday June 25, 5:30-7:30pm, ARE “GREEN JOBS” UNION JOBS? Pioneer Valley CLC, 640 Page Blvd, Springfield. Green Jobs are all the rage now – for good reason, especially in Western Mass, where retrofitting buildings could provide a lot of jobs and we have the expertise, BUT are they union jobs?

Whoa! D.O. telecommutes into the show from the hills of North Leverett; another Enviro Show first! Bad enough he burned up a shitload of fossil fuels coming in late from the Vineyard, he sure wasn’t gonna’ multiply his sins drivin’ that much further into Florence for half a show. O for an all-electric truck! (why not get Dad an all electric truck for father’s day!!).

We had a good chat with Prof. George Huber on just that subject….well, alternative fuel made from wood waste that is, right in his UMass lab! In the process of going on about gas we naturally took a piece out of Big Oil and their operatives in the White House. Did you catch Jim Page’s tune, “Petroleum Bonapart” that we played? Check it out here. Speaking of Darth Vader & the boy emperor, did you hear about that Supreme Court ruling upholding habeas corpus? Gosh, that’s soooo 17th century! Now Darth & George, et.al., might have their torture doctrine aired in court….in public! Toooo bad! O, and speaking of the White House and torture, have you read D.O.’s White House Torture Sonnets? (you won’t hear any of these on any community radio station poetry shows….not that he didn’t try pitchin’ it). Hopefully, it won’t be torture reading them, right??

Next Enviro Show it’s Jean & Glen on the horn with Chris Cuomo delving once more into the climate crisis. Sorry we ran out of time for the Bus Stop Billboard announcements. You can pick them up on our regular Enviro Show blog here. Tune in Tuesday, June 24 at 6:30pm and remember: listen to your Mother!!

Greetings Earthlings. Jean’s back! Hopefully she’ll have a report from the front lines. We return to the scene of the crime with another look at fossil fuels and what’s out there to replace them. Professor <a href=” http://umassmag.com/2008/Spring_2008/Prerequisite/biofuel.html”>George Huber</a>, researcher at UMass Amherst’s Chemical Engineering Department joins us in the studio for a look at biofuels that don’t eat up the crops. As always, we’ll checkout the Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the latest news on the environment, and we’ll see what Darth Cheney and the boy emperor are up to, as well as give you the quote of the week, but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! <a href=” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOnfRt2zf14&feature=related”>Sheep attacks car!</a> OK fans, talk about a Dodge Ram. How about a VW Ram? This is a see-it-to-believe-it video version of Revenge of the Critters. An Enviro Show blog exclusive!<p>

Here’s the Enviro Show Quote of the Week: “There is nothing more important in the culture of man [and we'd add: woman]than to resist the dangers of commerce” -Ralph Waldo Emerson. <p>

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we celebrate the end of the road for the <a href=”http://www.grist.org/news/2008/06/03/hummer/?source=daily#comments”>Hummer</a>. Toooo bad! Instead, according to the Washington Post, <a href=”http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/02/AR2008060201545_pf.html”>Travelers are turning to public transportation</a>. Meanwhile, the International Herald Tribune tells us <a href=http://www.iht.com/bin/printfriendly.php?id=12874048>bike sales are up</a>. AND this from Reuters: <a href=”http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSL03622524″>Pact needed to save biofuels</a> (what? Crops for food, not for fuel? How last year is that??) AND finally, though we’re not big Thomas Friedman fans, we can’t help but echo some of the sentiment he expressed in <a href=”http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/28/opinion/28friedman.html”>this piece</a> in his New York Times column. <p>

There it is again! That god-awful theme music. Glen, tell us when it’s FINALLY over! This just in: In a report long delayed by partisan squabbling, the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday accused President Bush and Vice President Cheney of taking the country to war in Iraq by exaggerating evidence of links between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda. SURPRIZE! Also, Bush regime crony says goal for rich countries to curb greenhouse gases are <a href” http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN0337238320080604”>”frankly not do-able for us”</a>. No? Did you check that with Darth? <p>

Speaking of Darth and the boy emperor,“Petroleum Bonapart” by Jim Page, longtime enviro troubadour, takes us to our interview with George Huber. Word has it that his daughter will be sitting in with us so we’ll try to behave like adults……maybe.<p>

Then we’ll browse the Bus Stop Billboard for the latest:

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 from 7 – 8 PM. CITIZENS UNITED FOR A HEALTHY FUTURE GENERAL MEETING. Toxics Action will be giving a presentation on Zero Waste in the Social Room of the Unitarian Society, 220 Main Street, Northampton (please walk down the driveway and use right side door, the meeting is downstairs). The proposed Northampton Regional Landfill expansion over the Barnes aquifer threatens the public drinking water supply in our area. If it goes forward, it would exempt a landfill in a Water Supply Protection District for the first time in Massachusetts.

Thursday, June 12, 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ZONING ENFORCEMENT APPEAL City Council Chambers & Planning Director’s Office, Puchalski Building and Northampton City Hall Room 10, 212 and 210 Main Street Northampton MA.
5:30 p.m. ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS meets in the Council Chambers to hear an appeal of the Building Commissioner’s decision on alleged zoning violations of the Northampton Regional Landfill and seeking discontinuance of use as regional sanitary landfill. Citizens United for a Healthy Future. Stop the Northampton landfill expansion. www.savingparadise.info

Wednesday,June 18, 7 pm. NUCLEAR POWER: AT WHAT COST? Bangs Community Center, Boltwood Walk, Amherst, MA (behind the Unitarian Meetinghouse, Kellogg and N. Pleasant Sts.). The Enviro Show is a proud co-sponsor, btw. Call 256-1760

June 20-21, TAKING CHARGE OF OUR ENERGY FUTURE. UMass Amherst Campus Center, Amherst, MA. The Summit will be a hotbed of activity helping to create a network of thriving local communities – urban and rural – working together across race and class -building a way of life and an energy future that is sustainable and just.

Wednesday June 25. 5:30-7:30pm, ARE “GREEN JOBS” UNION JOBS? Pioneer Valley CLC, 640 Page Blvd, Springfield. Green Jobs are all the rage now – for good reason, especially in Western Mass, where retrofitting buildings could provide a lot of jobs and we have the expertise. But not everyone is talking Green Jobs as Union Jobs and the possibility of Scabby Green Jobs looms large here. A Working Group on the Green Economy will discuss the issue.
So much for this week. Next time it’s Chris Cuomo with some climate crisis observations from way up north. Until then remember: listen to your Mother! ]

–John McCain and Rudy Giuliani head towards the first steps in running for president in 2008.

–Why would the first Muslim Congressman have to prove that he “is not working with our enemies?”

–The Donald Rumsfeld resignation: How does it affect the Middle East, did Bush acknowledge lying about the resignation, who would describe the resignation as evidence that George W. Bush is decisive, and did Donald Rumsfeld flip off a crowd?

–Who is “outing” homosexual Republicans?

–Senators John McCain (R) and Carl Levin (D) give their ever-more-similar opinions on the situation in Iraq.

–Which pundit swore on live television…or did they?

–OJ Simpson is writing a new book on how he would have committed the murder of which he was acquitted.

Total Running Time: 58:28

This Week’s Topics:

–Deval Patrick, Democratic candidate for Massachusetts governor in 2006 joins us from his campaign headquarters.

–Andrew Varnon from the Valley Advocate sits in on the show.

–What is so pro-family about being anti-gay-marriage? Also, why do the states with the most same-sex couples have the least divorces?

–George W. Bush says, in plain English, that Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with the events of 9/11.

–Rush Limbaugh believes we should question the patriotism of those who questions George W. Bush.

–Citing no one, Joe Scarborough claims that “[s]ome Democrats” have suggested British terror plot “was just some ploy by the Republicans … to justify their actions in the war on terror.”

–Pat Buchanan on his new anti-Mexican, pro-white book tour…and for some reason, he’s all of a sudden defending Jews, which is a marked change from the past, but why?

–Tucker Carlson claims that Hillary Clinton “bulldozes everybody” because there are “so few men” in the Democratic party.

–We discuss the 2006 and 2008 elections, including who we already know can and can’t win, whether John Kerry and Al Gore should run again, and more.

Note: We apologize for somewhat distorted audio this week. We are working to fix the problem in time for next week’s show.
