We are fresh back from the front in the non-violent struggle against the corporados. D.O. & Jean will report back on their trip to both the #OccupyWallStreet and #OccupyBoston. Also, our roving reporter, Tom Neilson will report back from the DC Occupation of Freedom Plaza, then we remind everyone that the rape of the forests and the fouling of the biosphere is all about Corporate America with Chris Matera of Mass Forest Watch who joins us once again to connect the dots. As always we venture into our E-Valley-uation segment, the Enviro Show Echo Chamber and visit the Fool-on-the-hill, but first it’s time for…Revenge of the Critters! Human rights? How about bats rights!

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we note The New York Times has discovered the importance of forests. How’s that for hard-nosed reporting! Of course, we have to give them some credit for their front page, above the fold coverage of the Wall Street Occupation….but only some. And speaking of New York, how about YOU send Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly a note reminding them about the First Amendment? And this from Grist: UK activist denied entry into The States due to super glue attack on Obama!

In our E-Valley-uation segment we send out kudos to the folks who Occupied Northampton and Occupied Amherst. Who knows, maybe we’ll even consider OccupiedQuabbin!

This week’s Fool-on-the-Hill goes plural. GOP members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee get to wear the Fool’s cap for their opposition to a proposed regulation that would restrict the transportation and importation of nine types of snakes, including the Burmese Python, that are invasive and threatening to wildlife. Apparently, exotic invasives are job creators! Who knew! We thought all the snakes in the grass lying about job creation were Repugnican congressmen.

Our Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from Anonymous:

“We are legion. We are everywhere!” Well…..yeah!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber forest activists in Russia need help in efforts to halt the construction of a highway through the Khimki forest. Moving over to Pakistan: about that horrendous flooding? Would you be surprised to learn that illegal logging was a big part of the problem? And speaking of actions here on the blog: We invite you to sign on to commit to action against a fossil fuel pipeline and pumping project (”Trailbreaker”) that may bring tar sands bitumen through infrastructure across several American states and Canadian provinces. You can sign the pledge here.

In our E-Valley-uation segment we return to the Biomess! As you may recall, folks in Western Mass were instrumental in exposing the bullshit being put out by the biomass industry. Now the movement’s gone national (international actually) and it’s time for YOU to tell the EPA that emissions from biomass should not be ignored. Send your comments here. Also, the proposed incinerator in Springfield reminds us to sign the petition to Governor Deval Patrick asking him to walk the walk for a real Zero Waste plan. For that go here

After Glen’s interview with Tom Wessels it’s off to the Bus Stop Billboard:

Join Bob Leverett as he takes us to the top of Todd Mountain along the historic foot trail for a look at its old growth forests and wealth of champion trees. Bob discusses the story of the Mohawk Trail, past and present, including modern Native Americans who continue to find meaning in this place. The hike is strenuous.

Greetings Earthlings. We celebrate the Return of the Sun with Cassie and Winifred of Awentree in Easthampton. Speaking of war, we’ll checkout that infamous warmonger Darth Cheney and his target practice dummy (btw, do not throw your shoes at the radio). As always, we’ll peek into The Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the news of the day and give you the Quote of the week, but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Santa attacked by bobcat in Jersey!

There’s that theme again! So Glen, how long before Darth & the boy emperor have to hang their stockings somewhere else? As you may have heard, W has been very naughty: he’s endangered the polar bears. Santa will not be pleased!

That heartwarming tune, “All I want for Christmas is to impeach the President” takes us to the Enviro Show Echo Chamber where there’s good news to report (finally!), three dams are to be taken out on the Klamath River in Oregon and California (you see, it’s not all gloom & doom). Having said that, the Amazon? Not so much. AND this: Obama’s pick of Ken Salazar for Interior Secretary gets mixed reviews. ALSO, another Enviro Show Video Blog Special, this one for the holidays!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from Jonathan Swift: “We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.”

The Pagans & the Christians” by Dar Williams takes us to our interview with…..the pagans!

Then it’s on to the Bus Stop Billboard for a brief perusal:

Saturday, January 10. Washington, DC or…? Keep Winter Cold Polar Bear Plunge. We chose this date because the newly-elected U.S. Congress will be returning to Capitol Hill around this time. The new President will be inaugurated 10 days later. Our plunges into cold bodies of water will say loud and clear to our state and national government leaders that the time for strong action is now!Go to: http://www.keepwintercold.org.

January 9-11, 2009 – Please join us for our annual Winter Retreat for Earth Lovers, to be held at Earthlands in Petersham, Massachusetts. Take some time to reflect in the depths of winter while connecting with the natural world and with one another. Spaces are limited, so sign up soon! Please see our website for a retreat flyer with details and registration information, http://sacredearthnetwork.org/updates/

Saturday, January 17th, All day. Join the Northeast Organic Farming Association for the 22nd Annual Winter Conference, Organic Farming: The Roots of a Sustainable Community.
We’ll go out with “The holidays are here and we’re still at war” by Brett Dennen. Can you belive this?? Next time it’s the wonderful world of run-off. Until then remember: listen to your Mother!

Watch out for ‘dem donkeys!

The tune “We are everywhere” by Dave Rovics reminds us that OK, so YES, WE DID! We did finally show the door to the Repugnicans, BUT there’s still weeks to go before they get dragged out that White House door, and even then we have to ask: how much does Obama owe to the corporados? Let’s hear from some Enviro Show listeners. Give us a call at (413)585-1033 and let know your thoughts: will an Obama Administration put the corporados in their place? Soooo, we continue to celebrate the light at the end of this loooong dark tunnel, but we remain vigilant as to just who has Barack Obama’s ear.

Glen! When does the Obama bouncer toss Darth & the boy emperor out the door? AND, what sort of damage can THE WORST ADMINISTRATION EVER do to the planet before they’re finally gone? Here’s one take: “Bush administration prepares environmental messes for the next prez”. AND this: “Bush admin to open almost 360,000 acres of Utah public lands to drilling”. If time allows, we’ll run through a list of other Repugnican enemies of the Earth, members of the League of Conservation Voters’ “Dirty Dozen”, that voters threw out of Congress last Tuesday.

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week naturally goes back to last Tuesday when Barack Obama spoke to tens of thousands gathered in Chicago after his victory at the polls:

“This is our moment. This is our time – to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth – that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes We Can.”

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we checkout Worcester Telegram on how our Forests, parks need friends.

Greetings Earthlings. Coming up on Halloween and not many days before we find out if we’re FINALLY rid of the Repugnican scourge OR subjected to yet another stolen election. Very scary. If it’s the latter, prepare to occupy the White House. Maybe we’ll paint it black! Tonight we’ll checkout the usual haunts for frightening news about the end of the world as we know it. Also, Tamara, the house witch, returns to these microphones to set the seasonal mood, as well as Betsy Dumont, a local bat expert from the Department of Biology at UMass Amherst, but first it’ time for…… Revenge of the Critters! Big Black Brit Cat Attack!.

After Tamara tells us about the thin veil between the world of the living and that of the dead we’ll hear from Count Dracula who hits the spike on the head when he tells us there ARE far worse things than death, like the gloom and doom of the climate crisis maybe? What? Gloom & doom on The Enviro Show? Nooooo! Say it ain’t so, Joe!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we checkout the Reuters story, Arctic air temperatures climb to record levels. So, what’s worse than dropping dead on the spot? How about slowly starving or contracting some gruesome tropical disease! Here’s some gloom & doom from Greenpeace. Not gloomy enough? How about The Most Dangerous Project on Earth? Had enough? Let’s move on!

O no! He’s back!! Lord Cheney. Glen? Can’t you get rid of these bad actors?? How much longer must we endure them? So, last time we had Darth Cheney here in the studio, kind of, right? How can we top that?? How about with this: Cheney LIKES being compared to Darth!. Perfect! Happy Halloween!

After we dance to the “Climate Mash” we’ll do our interview with Betsy Dumont about those winged rodents who frequent the night. Sadly, many of them are facing the mysterious and deadly “white nose disease”. We’ll find out about that and much more.

Then we checkout the Bus Stop Billboard:

Thursday, October 30, 6:30 – 8:30pm. Boom, Bust & Bailout – What happened and what to do about it. Unitarian Meeting House, N.Pleasant St., Amherst. Call 413-545-0743

Friday, October 31 – Keene, NH, 4:00 to 6:00 pm. “McSame Bush” SIGNS AND BANNER visibility standout. Rt. 101 & Rt. 10 South intersection, Keene, NH. Halloween costumes encouraged! More dates planned. For more information or to volunteer, call Judy at 978-544-5550.

Tuesday, November 4, All day. VOTE for sanity! Besides a sane Prez and VP, you might want to vote “yes” on Question 3 for the sake of the dogs. Also: vote “yes” on Question 6 if it’s on your ballot, which would put pressure on local representatives to support legislation mandating an 80 percent reduction of greenhouse emissions in Massachusetts by 2020 – 30 years sooner than more popular national measures. It would also phase out tax incentives for non-renewable energy projects and put focus on localized sustainability.

Thursday, November 6 at 6:30 pm at the Edwards Library in Southampton, MA, the Friends of Southampton Greenway will welcome R. Bruce Donald, President of the Farmington Valley Greenway as the monthly speaker. This is the same trail that will one day connect New Haven to Northampton. More info about Bruce, the speaker series and the project in Southampton, click on this site. http://www.southamptongreenway.org/

November 7 – 9. All Day. Reading the forested landscape: a natural history of New England w/Tom Wessels. Rowe Conference Center. Call: 413-339-4954 or go to: www.rowecenter.org

Sunday, November 16th, 9am to 5pm. Mass. Climate Action Network Conference. MIT Stada Center, Cambridge, MA. [beware of Cape Wind propaganda!] Go to: www.acteva.com/go/mcan

Thursday & Friday, November 20 – 21, 2008. All day. Building a Local Economy in the Valley. First Congregational Church, Hadley, MA. Sliding scale $25-$150, includes lunch and materials. Contact: www.faireconomy.org or (617) 423-2148.

So much for another Halloween show. Hope we made it grim enough for you, no? OK, so it’s NOT as scary as FrankenBarbie and Crazy John McSame. Give us an “E” for effort, will ya’? Happy Halloween!!………O, and remember: listen to your Mother!

Greetings Earthlings. Time to declare our independence from the enemies of the planet. Tom Neilson puts on his roving reporter’s hat and phones in from the heartland to talk about the proposed dumping of coal ash on farm land (what a concept!). We have a peek at local clearcutting facilitated by the Commonwealth (in their infinite wisdom!) and, as always, we give you the Enviro Show Quote of the Week, a visit with Darth Cheney and the boy emperor (both of whom experienced some un-welcomed rebellion on July 4 ), but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Slug epidemic in the UK!

Since it’s the Grab Bag Enviro Show we thought we’d reference this past national holiday and the Bush regime’s schemes for more war with “Army Nation” by the Boston band, Girl on Top. That’ll take us to The Enviro Show Quote of the Week: A year ago, Barack Obama compared “the tyranny of oil” to that of Fascism saying, “The very resource that has fueled our way of life over the last hundred years now threatens to destroy it if our generation does not act now and act boldly.” We assume such bold action does not include making war on Iran. How about a War on Corporados?

There it is again! Glen, is it over now?? Looks like the boy emperor caught some flak on his July 4 visit to Tomas Jefferson’s house! Meanwhile, here in the birthplace of Independence, Darth Cheney got a similar reception on the Fourth of July. So much for the good news, on to the Bush regimes usual misdeeds, like for instance White House tries to keep EPA from showing how greenhouse gases could be regulated. And this, Former EPA official talks about White House’s unwillingness to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. No!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we take a look at all the clearcuts here in the Commonwealth with a visit to the ClearcutMA blog. Stumps don’t lie, folks. You have to see it to believe it!

Finally, it’s time to scope out the Bus Stop Billboard:

At the convergences there will be dozens of workshops and trainings,
networking opportunities, and strategy sessions aimed at building a
strong grassroots movement for climate justice. The convergences are
spaces not only to fight climate change but to throw off the yoke of
corporate control over our lives, working to build community controlled
alternatives to Wall Street and Washington. The convergences will be
models of the world we wish to live in, utilizing sustainable living
skills and consensus based decision making by all participants.

The convergences are also an opportunity to hone your direct action
skills and put them into, well, action. While creating sustainable
alternatives is important, indeed necessary, we must also continue to
confront those that are creating and profiting from the climate crisis.
Each climate convergence will culminate in an exciting and empowering
direct action taking on a different aspect of the climate crisis in each
region.

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from none other than Rachel Carson. Tune in for those words of wisdom. Then: there’s that chilling sound again! Glen, how much longer will this torture go? LITERALLY!! OK, we knew Darth Cheney was a bad guy, right? We knew he probably kicks dogs and scares little kids, but now we find out he even hates whales!! ALSO, the Bush regime eats its’ own (for not putting the corporados first, of course): Top EPA fired for doing her job. Surprise!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber Destruction of mangrove forests in Burma left coastal areas exposed to cyclone. Finally, we echo the good work of the Native Forest Network in their struggle to prevent the Plum Creek corporados from turning Maine’s Great North woods into some sort of yuppie playground. Development….it’s a threat, who’d a thunk it??

“Earthworms” by Andrea Bunch from “Numinous” takes us to our interview with Lee Frelich. So we talked about some of the threats to the Northern Forest coming from slimeballs like Plum Creek, let’s see about those worms.

The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Great Hall of the Discovery Center, across the street from the town hall and the Shady Glen. At a meeting at the Turners Falls Airport on April 4th,
Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission executive director Robert Welch
claimed “tree-hugging Indians” were holding up progress on the runway
Fairbrother said they were “rock-hugging Indians.” TO WHICH WE SAY: ROCK ON INDIANS!!

“Forest” by System of a Down from “Toxic City” rocks us out (careful, this one has ragged edges!). Next time it’s urban enviros and the struggle. Soooo, remember: Listen to yur’ Mother!
