Greetings Earthlings. It’s a proposed landfill expansion hootenanny! Mary Serreze, whose recent piece in The Valley Advocate about Zero Waste and the dump issue, joins us to ask the musical question: Does your water taste funny when your neighbors dump on it? Also, we look deep into the darkness with Darth Cheney and the boy emperor. We’ll checkout The Enviro Show Echo Chamber and the Quote of the Week, but first it’s time for… Revenge of the Critters! Shark attacks boy….in his bedroom!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from author, Susan Griffin: “The part of the mind that is dark to us in this culture, that is sleeping in us, that we name ‘unconscious’, is the knowledge that we are inseparable from all other beings in the universe”.

There’s the Darth Cheney fanfare again! Glen! Tell us it’s over NOW!! When do Darth Cheney and his little sock puppet exit stage right? We’ve been talking these past few weeks about all the ecological damage these enemies of the planet are doing on their way out the door. Last time we delved into the top 100 Bush regime rollbacks. Now add this one: their vile minions in the EPA have finalized rules that will make it easier for mountaintop mining companies to dump their waste near rivers and streams.

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we pile on DC insiders Environmental Defense along with our friends from Rising Tide over that carbon trading scam you keep hearing about. Also, did Big Auto really earn that loan? AND, Obama embraces Big Oil with the James Jones pick.

Then, live from the luxurious Pine Street Studios of WXOJ-LP it’s Mary Serreze and the Zero Waste Valley Band! After Mary rocks the walls we’ll have a chat about this concept of putting a dump over an aquifer. Is that living better through chemistry??

Then it’s on to the Bus Stop Billboard:

Tuesday, December 9 at 8 PM. Talk to Bill McKibben and Michael Brune about Global Warming. Prepare for an earnest and lively discussion with RAN Executive Director Michael Brune and writer-activist Bill McKibben, followed by a Q & A the steps we need to take collectively to free our country and our world of fossil fuels. You can remind Bill that Cape Wind is the privatization of the Commons! Just call: 1-866-864-8698 And type in the passcode: 1051283210

Thurday, December 11, 6pm. Home Depot “Grand Opening” sprawl teach-in. Food for Thought Books, Amherst. Scheduled speakers so far include Emily Kawano (populareconomics.org), Jeff Lacey (Shutes Planning Board and professional planner, who will project some great slides on the wall). We’ll be approaching the issue from the same diversity of perspectives that worked so nicely for the wal-mart campaign: local economy, downtowns, employers, domestic workers, sweatshops abroad, students, seniors, environmentalists, cyclists, etc. For info call: 413 549 1193

Saturday, December 13, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Small animals up close. Family science days are designed for families with children ages 5-8, with adults participating along with their children. Some of the creatures you may meet are: walking stick insects, land snails, goldfish, hissing cockroaches, large millipedes and Speedy the box turtle. Pre-registration is required; please call (413) 256-6006.

Thursday, Dec. 18, 7-9pm. Ritual Chant Circle to embrace the time of Yule and the Winter Season. 102 Cottage Street in Easthampton. (413) 527-3331

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber the BIG news is DINGELL’S OUT! The Congressman from Big Auto gets towed!! The Waxman is in! Also, Obama on climate change. You’ll note he doesn’t use the term “climate crisis”. There’s only a “financial crisis”. Tell that to the south sea islanders and the polar bears! Also, That One is talking cap & trade, he’s talking nukes, “clean” coal (groan). Say it ain’t so, O! Finally, Dems boot Lieberman from Environment Committee (how’s THAT for Joe-mentum! What? you want MORE punishment for Traitor Joe?

Brrr! It ain’t just the cold that makes us shiver. Glen! Tell us it’s over soon!! Darth Cheney and the boy emperor have trashed years worth of environmental protection. Will Obama reverse the worse 100 Bush regime rollbacks? Sign the petition. OK, last time we told you about the Bush regime’s 11th hour move for more wolf slaughter out west, right? It’s time to TAKE ACTION! There’s only a few more days to get your comments to U.S. Fish & Wildlife (of course, you COULD deliver your comments in-person to their office on Rt. 9 in Hadley behind Staples, maybe along with….what? some theatrics? IF you wanted to).

The Enviro Show Quote of the day is a variation on our theme, it comes from Albert Einstein: “The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking, and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophes”

Watch out for ‘dem donkeys!

The tune “We are everywhere” by Dave Rovics reminds us that OK, so YES, WE DID! We did finally show the door to the Repugnicans, BUT there’s still weeks to go before they get dragged out that White House door, and even then we have to ask: how much does Obama owe to the corporados? Let’s hear from some Enviro Show listeners. Give us a call at (413)585-1033 and let know your thoughts: will an Obama Administration put the corporados in their place? Soooo, we continue to celebrate the light at the end of this loooong dark tunnel, but we remain vigilant as to just who has Barack Obama’s ear.

Glen! When does the Obama bouncer toss Darth & the boy emperor out the door? AND, what sort of damage can THE WORST ADMINISTRATION EVER do to the planet before they’re finally gone? Here’s one take: “Bush administration prepares environmental messes for the next prez”. AND this: “Bush admin to open almost 360,000 acres of Utah public lands to drilling”. If time allows, we’ll run through a list of other Repugnican enemies of the Earth, members of the League of Conservation Voters’ “Dirty Dozen”, that voters threw out of Congress last Tuesday.

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week naturally goes back to last Tuesday when Barack Obama spoke to tens of thousands gathered in Chicago after his victory at the polls:

“This is our moment. This is our time – to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth – that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes We Can.”

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we checkout Worcester Telegram on how our Forests, parks need friends. ALSO, New law protects old-growth in N.Y. Forests. AND, this from RAN: Rainforests and agriculture.

Then it’s time for our conversation with Chris Matera. Did you know there was clearcutting of our public forests in the Quabbin and on the Montague Plains? You can see the photos here on Chris’ blog.

Greetings Earthlings. We’ve been focusing on the communities health here lately with regard to the proposed expansion of the Northampton dump over the Barnes Aquifer and tonight we’ll be hearing from author/activist, Jeff Conant whose recent book “A Community Guide to Environmental Health” seems right up our alley. As always we’ll be checking in on Darth Cheney, the boy emperor, John McSame and Sarah Barracuda (all prime suspects in an organized criminal enterprise disguised as a political party). We’ll checkout some news on the Enviro Show Eco Chamber and have the Quote of the Week, but first it’s time for…Revenge of the Critters! Deer attacks hunter and lawn chair!

Glen? Is it safe to come out yet? Will we ever be rid of the Bush regime? What if John McSame & Caribou Barbie steal the election? Will the Dark Lord continue his rein? We posted the candidates enviro programs on the Indymedia Climate site. Suffice it to say, the McSame/Palin plan is looking….how shall we say? Malnourished? Are we surprised that Grampy McSame (pssst, he’s crazy) failed to mention the climate crisis during his acceptance speech at the RNC? They did however have a group chant: “drill baby, drill!” (is this a Hollywood movie we’re in??). We can’t make this stuff up! Once again we find ourselves quoting Thomas Friedman (sorry) who hits the nail on the head regarding McSame: “John McCain has completed his makeover from the greenest Republican to run for president to just another representative of big oil”. (Thomas must’ve been listening to our show!) ALSO, that’s the Bush regime’s Minerals Management Service that was caught with their pants down recently. We thought the Repugnicans were God-fearing folk! Drugs? Sex? Graft and corruption? We are shocked, shocked we say!

“The American War” by Simone White takes us to The Enviro Show Quote of the Week which comes from former president Dwight Eisenhower. This is in recognition of Hurricane Ike and the warmongering comments of the Repugnican Vice Presidential candidate with regard to Russia. We’ll hear it in Ike’s own words.

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we checkout Climate Indymedia for a report on the Biotechnology Industry designing nightmare biofuels. AND, speaking of nightmares, checkout this bone-chilling video for our Enviro Show Blog Bonus. Criket Attack!

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from Al Gore (or Gore-al, as we like to say, sounding the alarm on Earth, rather than on Krypton): “You see that pale, blue dot? That’s us. Everything that has ever happened in all of human history, has happened on that pixel. All the triumphs and all the tragedies, all the wars all the famines, all the major advances… it’s our only home. And that is what is at stake, our ability to live on planet Earth, to have a future as a civilization. I believe this is a moral issue, it is your time to seize this issue, it is our time to rise again to secure our future.”

What’s that sound, Glen? When and will we be saved from the Bush regime?? Never mind us, when will all the endangered species be safe from these guys? You’re gonna’ love this one: Cleanup funding inadequate for Bush-designated marine monument. Maybe it’s fitting to leave all that plastic crap floating around George’s “monument”!

So, who IS the man behind the curtain on the John McSame campaign campaign trail? Could it be the man from Big Oil?? You can bet yur’ sweet crude it is!! In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we have a look at Bob Herbert’s op-ed piece in the New York Times, “An empty promise”. Our Enviro Show Blog Bonus is all about pain at the pump. Check it!

“It really isn’t garbage” by Pat Humphries takes us to our interview with Linda Hiesiger and Mike Fedora concerning the clever idea of putting a dump over one of Easthampton’s water supplies. Talk about planning ahead!

Greetings Earthlings. Time to declare our independence from the enemies of the planet. Tom Neilson puts on his roving reporter’s hat and phones in from the heartland to talk about the proposed dumping of coal ash on farm land (what a concept!). We have a peek at local clearcutting facilitated by the Commonwealth (in their infinite wisdom!) and, as always, we give you the Enviro Show Quote of the Week, a visit with Darth Cheney and the boy emperor (both of whom experienced some un-welcomed rebellion on July 4 ), but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Slug epidemic in the UK!

Since it’s the Grab Bag Enviro Show we thought we’d reference this past national holiday and the Bush regime’s schemes for more war with “Army Nation” by the Boston band, Girl on Top. That’ll take us to The Enviro Show Quote of the Week: A year ago, Barack Obama compared “the tyranny of oil” to that of Fascism saying, “The very resource that has fueled our way of life over the last hundred years now threatens to destroy it if our generation does not act now and act boldly.” We assume such bold action does not include making war on Iran. How about a War on Corporados?

There it is again! Glen, is it over now?? Looks like the boy emperor caught some flak on his July 4 visit to Tomas Jefferson’s house! Meanwhile, here in the birthplace of Independence, Darth Cheney got a similar reception on the Fourth of July. So much for the good news, on to the Bush regimes usual misdeeds, like for instance White House tries to keep EPA from showing how greenhouse gases could be regulated. And this, Former EPA official talks about White House’s unwillingness to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. No!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we take a look at all the clearcuts here in the Commonwealth with a visit to the ClearcutMA blog. Stumps don’t lie, folks. You have to see it to believe it!

Finally, it’s time to scope out the Bus Stop Billboard:

At the convergences there will be dozens of workshops and trainings,
networking opportunities, and strategy sessions aimed at building a
strong grassroots movement for climate justice. The convergences are
spaces not only to fight climate change but to throw off the yoke of
corporate control over our lives, working to build community controlled
alternatives to Wall Street and Washington. The convergences will be
models of the world we wish to live in, utilizing sustainable living
skills and consensus based decision making by all participants.

The convergences are also an opportunity to hone your direct action
skills and put them into, well, action. While creating sustainable
alternatives is important, indeed necessary, we must also continue to
confront those that are creating and profiting from the climate crisis.
Each climate convergence will culminate in an exciting and empowering
direct action taking on a different aspect of the climate crisis in each
region.

Revenge of the Critters! Tree attacks golf cart! It was another one of those days on the links in Minnesota. One golfer says: “I’ve seen this happen time and time again. You make the turn after shooting a 48 and polishing off two dogs and a six pack of the Beast, when out of nowhere a tree attacks your golf cart!” One of the occupants had his leg impaled by the tree they rammed on what was believed to be drunk driving in the rough.. Hey, no one ever said there’s no such thing as payback! Get a clue: golf courses are part of the problem!

Here’s our Quote of the Week:
“What is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?”
– Henry David Thoreau

There it is again! What’s the Bush regime countdown now?? Speaking of the Dark Lord, it seems Cheney wants to drill for oil everywhere! Naturally, the boy emperor (and his would be successor) couldn’t help but….err..pipe up about it? Then, as if by plan (hmmm…) the emperor from Big Oil tries coercing Dems into opening our coastlines to Big Oil, effectively blaming Dems for the high price of oil! Is anyone stupid enough to believe him?? Big Oil already has thousands of unused leases and idle wells in the U.S.! AND, of course, the Repugnicans in Congress already showed their true colors on climate change the week before Darth, the emperor, and John McSame began their latest surge for Big Oil. Did we mention that crazy John McSame wants to build 45 new nukes by 2030?

Here’s the Enviro Show Blog Bonus: checkout this video about how Big Oil fuels McSame’s not so Straight Talk Express!

The tune “Excuse me your planet is burning” by Andy Vine takes us to our interview with Chris.

Duct taped to the Bus Stop Billboard we find:

Whoa! D.O. telecommutes into the show from the hills of North Leverett; another Enviro Show first! Bad enough he burned up a shitload of fossil fuels coming in late from the Vineyard, he sure wasn’t gonna’ multiply his sins drivin’ that much further into Florence for half a show. O for an all-electric truck! (why not get Dad an all electric truck for father’s day!!).

We had a good chat with Prof. George Huber on just that subject….well, alternative fuel made from wood waste that is, right in his UMass lab! In the process of going on about gas we naturally took a piece out of Big Oil and their operatives in the White House. Did you catch Jim Page’s tune, “Petroleum Bonapart” that we played? Check it out here. Speaking of Darth Vader & the boy emperor, did you hear about that Supreme Court ruling upholding habeas corpus? Gosh, that’s soooo 17th century! Now Darth & George, et.al., might have their torture doctrine aired in court….in public! Toooo bad! O, and speaking of the White House and torture, have you read D.O.’s White House Torture Sonnets? (you won’t hear any of these on any community radio station poetry shows….not that he didn’t try pitchin’ it). Hopefully, it won’t be torture reading them, right??

Next Enviro Show it’s Jean & Glen on the horn with Chris Cuomo delving once more into the climate crisis. Sorry we ran out of time for the Bus Stop Billboard announcements. You can pick them up on our regular Enviro Show blog here. Tune in Tuesday, June 24 at 6:30pm and remember: listen to your Mother!!

–Overview of House and Senate seats up for reelection, gubernatorial elections, as well as updated projections for each of the three based on the most recent polls and analysis.

–Deval Patrick, Democratic candidate for Governor of Massachusetts, discusses his campaign and the upcoming election, and we follow up with him at a recent debate in Springfield, Massachusetts.

–Medea Benjamin, of Code Pink and Global Exchange, joins David Pakman to talk about whether or not her public protests and the arrests that they lead to are the best way to get people voting for the anti-war candidates, as well as many other related issues.

–Congressman Harold Ford Jr. recently showed up at his Republican opponent’s press conference to attempt to debate him on Iraq, and we listen to local media coverage of the debate, and the actual exchange they had in the parking lot near the press conference.

–Karlyn Bowman of the American Enterprise Institute discussed a study on public opinion regarding the war in Iraq, and how important the Iraq war is to the upcoming election.

–Amanda Terkel of the Center for American Progress explains how 9/11 as well as the ideas of terror and security have been used and politicized relating to elections.

–Scott Keeter, Director of Survey Research at the Pew Research Center tells us about all of the recent polls, how polls can be skewed, and what we can expect on voting day.

–We look at likely Democratic gains in the Governors races, as well as notable Senate races and how they are shaping up.
