In attendance: Alan Vogel, Keely Malone, Linda & Eddie Kennedy, Bush-I Harvey, Katerine Reason, Steve Cutting, Lila Wolan, and Jay Chase

1) New Obscenity Policy

The new obscenity policy was reviewed. The new policy distinguishes between intentional and unintentional obscenity violations. It also allows for immediate removal of all programming privileges if the violation is malicious in its intent, but also gives space for an unintentional slip up to be removed from a programmer’s record after 90 days. The policy will be reviewed at the next board Meeting–**Board please be advised and add this item to the next board meeting agenda.

2) New Attendance Policy

A new attendance policy will be written and presented at the August Prog Comm meeting. The new policy will distinguish between intentional blow off, and unintentional error/emergency/illness and will also have a 90 day cleanse of all old infractions.

3) Look Park Fundraising Event

Each Liaison was given a copy of Bush I’s letter to distribute to their collective members to solicit donations from local businesses. All programmers are encouraged to solicit funds, donations for a raffle, or a discount offered to VFR members.

4) People Going Over Their Allotted Time

One issue that has come up is people going over their alloted time thinking they are "filling in" until the next programmer arrives. This seems kind, but in fact this has meant that at times, programmers have prerecorded and automated a show that doesn’t get played for gets run over when the previous programmer doesn’t switch over to automation at the correct time.

NO Programmer should go outside of their alloted time, unless they are the official substitute DJ for that slot, or unless they are the closers of the program day–it was by Prog Commdecided that live dj is preferred in a late night to automated music. AND all programmers (or studio managers) should be checking off "automated" in the Red Log Book in the studio so the programmers can see taht there is in fact something to follow their show.

The issue was also raised that some programmers are inserting their shows themselves into automation–these programmers have been warned.

6) New Programmers Check List

Linda created a card that New programmers need to get filled out before they are approved to be on the air. The cards will be distributed at Tony U’s trainings and will be turned in to liaisons upon meeting all requirements. Trainers and programmers that do sit ins will sign off on the cards to confirm all has been done.

7) Advanced Training

There is interest in compiling a schedule of advanced trainings for DJs who want to spruce up their skills. Anyone who feels able to run and advance (or reminder) training please contact the Prog Comm 2 vfrprogramming@gmail.com–come on–stop getting mad that people are doing things wrong and start teaching them how to do it right!!!

NEXT MEETING: AUGUST 21st 7pm at Evolution Cafe

Greetings Earthlings. It’s Koyanaskatsi, a world out of balance, thanks to industrialized human-centric society, but hey, we can evolve right?? Umm….right? (...)

Greetings Earthlings. It’s Koyanaskatsi, a world out of balance, thanks to industrialized human-centric society, but hey, we can evolve right?? Umm….right? Re-wilding, or reintroducing displaced species may be part of the solution. We have a conversation with Rob Edward, Carnivore Recovery Director for WildEarth Guardians. Of course we’ll always find time to bash Bush and the Empire, and checkout The Enviro Show Echo Chamber and Quote of the Week, as well as a call from Tom Neilson out on the road, but first it’s time for….Revenge of the Critters! We jump into the Wayback Machine for a tale of man and wolf.

The Enviro Show Quote of the Week comes from the dean of enviro thought, Aldo Leopold from the essay “Thinking like a mountain”: “The cowman who cleans his range of wolves does not realize that he is taking over the wolf’s job of trimming the herd to fit the range. He has not learned to think like a mountain. Hence we have dustbowls, and rivers washing the future into the sea.” Ahmen!

Los Lobos’ “Will the Wolf Survive?” takes us to the Enviro Show Echo Chamber where we revisit the Boston Globe story about the Gray wolf that was killed in Shelburne last March. This sorry incident is what led us to do this week’s show on wolf reintroduction. We also checkout the Restore the North Woods website and the latest on Northeast wolf reintroduction from the Maine Wolf Coalition. You can meet some LIVE reps from the wolf community right here in the Commonwealth, by the way. Checkout Wolf Hollow in Ipswich. Then we read from the Daily Hampshire Gazette’s coverage of the recent event concerning the Northampton landfill expansion proposal.

It’s that Darth Cheney dirge again! When will it end!! Glen, what’s the count? How many days?? Of course you’ve heard Darth and the boy emperor want to drill their way out of the gas crisis (a scam within a scam within a scam…these guys are the worst!). Bush says he’ll lift the ban on offshore drilling signed by his father. That will go exactly nowhere since there’s also a congressional ban (though Cape Wind proponents might like the sight of more trashed coastlines!….sorry, couldn’t resist). Luckily Barbra Boxer and Nancy Pelosi are digging in their high heels. Here’s the Enviro Show Blog Bonus: Dig your heels in too!. Did you catch the emperor’s farewell “joke” at the G8? He said to his fellow leaders: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.” The rightwing flat-earth robos loved it. Gaia, help rid us of this plague!!

Meanwhile, here in the real world, we checkout the Bus stop billboard:

July 9th, 2008

Produced by:
David Pakman, WXOJ, Northampton, MA
Louis Motamedi, WXOJ, Northampton, M

Total Running Time: 55:17

This Week’s Topics:

–A preview of the Jesse Jackson - Barack Obama controversy.

–Gas prices keep rising as GM says it will cut certain models and many white collar workers.

–George W. Bush insists drilling domestically is the solution to the gas price situation, and has a recent speech interrupted by protesters numerous times.

–Iraq is requesting a timetable for withdrawal of troops from the US.

–In the middle of the overwhelming disapproval on Iraq, Condi Rice is still proud that the US invaded Iraq, while President Bush is confident that the strategy in Iraq will work…but what is the strategy this week?

–US exports to Iran have increased under the Bush White House, and responding to a question about it, John McCain made another poor taste Iran-related gaffe, and then suggest he hates bloggers at one of his town hall meetings.

–Senator John Kerry again says that there are two John McCains.

–More suggestions that McCain is a maverick straight-talker, and even more confusion about just what McCain’s position on the new GI Bill is.

–A Fox News panelist suggests that gay-bashing might be McCain’s best strategy going forward.

–More inaccurate explanations of the Wesley Clark - John McCain controversy over McCain credentials to be president.

–The false claim that unemployment is lower now than under Bill Clinton is pushed by Bill O’Reilly.

–Michael Dukakis says that suggesting Obama is a far-left candidate is delusional.

–Chris Matthews, in what’s become his trademark type of statement, asks if Obama can win over regular, white voters.

–Much more…

Greetings Earthlings. Time to declare our independence from the enemies of the planet. (...)

Greetings Earthlings. Time to declare our independence from the enemies of the planet. Tom Neilson puts on his roving reporter’s hat and phones in from the heartland to talk about the proposed dumping of coal ash on farm land (what a concept!). We have a peek at local clearcutting facilitated by the Commonwealth (in their infinite wisdom!) and, as always, we give you the Enviro Show Quote of the Week, a visit with Darth Cheney and the boy emperor (both of whom experienced some un-welcomed rebellion on July 4 ), but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Slug epidemic in the UK!

Since it’s the Grab Bag Enviro Show we thought we’d reference this past national holiday and the Bush regime’s schemes for more war with “Army Nation” by the Boston band, Girl on Top. That’ll take us to The Enviro Show Quote of the Week: A year ago, Barack Obama compared “the tyranny of oil” to that of Fascism saying, “The very resource that has fueled our way of life over the last hundred years now threatens to destroy it if our generation does not act now and act boldly.” We assume such bold action does not include making war on Iran. How about a War on Corporados?

There it is again! Glen, is it over now?? Looks like the boy emperor caught some flak on his July 4 visit to Tomas Jefferson’s house! Meanwhile, here in the birthplace of Independence, Darth Cheney got a similar reception on the Fourth of July. So much for the good news, on to the Bush regimes usual misdeeds, like for instance White House tries to keep EPA from showing how greenhouse gases could be regulated. And this, Former EPA official talks about White House’s unwillingness to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. No!

In the Enviro Show Echo Chamber we take a look at all the clearcuts here in the Commonwealth with a visit to the ClearcutMA blog. Stumps don’t lie, folks. You have to see it to believe it!

alternatives to Wall Street and Washington. The convergences will be
models of the world we wish to live in, utilizing sustainable living

–Imus once again in the news comments about race, and his explanation might as well have been in another language. Also, Barbara Walters defends Imus.

–John McCain says more oil drilling might not change the price of gas much, but it would have a psychological effect.

–One of John McCain’s advisors says that a terrorist attack would be a big advantage to McCain in the presidential election.

–John McCain is very into eBay as a possible solution to the recession, but McCain seems to know so little about computers that his campaign’s recent statement could only go as far as to say that McCain is “aware of the internet.”

–Michelle Obama’s appearance on The View.

–3 in 10 Americans admit to having a racial bias when it comes to Barack Obama and the presidential election.

We return to the subject of the climate crisis once again, this time we head north with a call-in from Chris Cuomo on the impact of climate change to native Alaskans. This week we take a little more time delving into the sins of Darth Cheney and the boy emperor, as well as the presumed successor to the throne, John McSame. We’ll give you the Enviro Show Quote of the Week and stop off at the Bus Stop Billboard (this time we’ll take time to read the notices), but first it’s time for……

Revenge of the Critters! Tree attacks golf cart! It was another one of those days on the links in Minnesota. One golfer says: “I’ve seen this happen time and time again. You make the turn after shooting a 48 and polishing off two dogs and a six pack of the Beast, when out of nowhere a tree attacks your golf cart!” One of the occupants had his leg impaled by the tree they rammed on what was believed to be drunk driving in the rough.. Hey, no one ever said there’s no such thing as payback! Get a clue: golf courses are part of the problem!

Here’s our Quote of the Week:
“What is the use of a house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?”
- Henry David Thoreau

There it is again! What’s the Bush regime countdown now?? Speaking of the Dark Lord, it seems Cheney wants to drill for oil everywhere! Naturally, the boy emperor (and his would be successor) couldn’t help but….err..pipe up about it? Then, as if by plan (hmmm…) the emperor from Big Oil tries coercing Dems into opening our coastlines to Big Oil, effectively blaming Dems for the high price of oil! Is anyone stupid enough to believe him?? Big Oil already has thousands of unused leases and idle wells in the U.S.! AND, of course, the Repugnicans in Congress already showed their true colors on climate change the week before Darth, the emperor, and John McSame began their latest surge for Big Oil. Did we mention that crazy John McSame wants to build 45 new nukes by 2030?

Here’s the Enviro Show Blog Bonus: checkout this video about how Big Oil fuels McSame’s not so Straight Talk Express!

The tune “Excuse me your planet is burning” by Andy Vine takes us to our interview with Chris.

Duct taped to the Bus Stop Billboard we find:

Whoa! D.O. telecommutes into the show from the hills of North Leverett; another Enviro Show first! Bad enough he burned up a shitload of fossil fuels coming in late from the Vineyard, he sure wasn’t gonna’ multiply his sins drivin’ that much further into Florence for half a show. O for an all-electric truck! (why not get Dad an all electric truck for father’s day!!).

We had a good chat with Prof. George Huber on just that subject….well, alternative fuel made from wood waste that is, right in his UMass lab! In the process of going on about gas we naturally took a piece out of Big Oil and their operatives in the White House. Did you catch Jim Page’s tune, “Petroleum Bonapart” that we played? Check it out here. Speaking of Darth Vader & the boy emperor, did you hear about that Supreme Court ruling upholding habeas corpus? Gosh, that’s soooo 17th century! Now Darth & George, et.al., might have their torture doctrine aired in court….in public! Toooo bad! O, and speaking of the White House and torture, have you read D.O.’s White House Torture Sonnets? (you won’t hear any of these on any community radio station poetry shows….not that he didn’t try pitchin’ it). Hopefully, it won’t be torture reading them, right??

Next Enviro Show it’s Jean & Glen on the horn with Chris Cuomo delving once more into the climate crisis. Sorry we ran out of time for the Bus Stop Billboard announcements. You can pick them up on our regular Enviro Show blog here. Tune in Tuesday, June 24 at 6:30pm and remember: listen to your Mother!!

Greetings Earthlings. Jean’s back! Hopefully she’ll have a report from the front lines. (...)

Greetings Earthlings. Jean’s back! Hopefully she’ll have a report from the front lines. We return to the scene of the crime with another look at fossil fuels and what’s out there to replace them. Professor <a href=” http://umassmag.com/2008/Spring_2008/Prerequisite/biofuel.html”>George Huber</a>, researcher at UMass Amherst’s Chemical Engineering Department joins us in the studio for a look at biofuels that don’t eat up the crops. As always, we’ll checkout the Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the latest news on the environment, and we’ll see what Darth Cheney and the boy emperor are up to, as well as give you the quote of the week, but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! <a href=” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOnfRt2zf14&feature=related”>Sheep attacks car!</a> OK fans, talk about a Dodge Ram. How about a VW Ram? This is a see-it-to-believe-it video version of Revenge of the Critters. An Enviro Show blog exclusive!<p>

Here’s the Enviro Show Quote of the Week: “There is nothing more important in the culture of man [and we'd add: woman]than to resist the dangers of commerce” -Ralph Waldo Emerson. <p>

In The Enviro Show Echo Chamber we celebrate the end of the road for the <a href=”http://www.grist.org/news/2008/06/03/hummer/?source=daily#comments”>Hummer</a>. Toooo bad! Instead, according to the Washington Post, <a href=”http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/02/AR2008060201545_pf.html”>Travelers are turning to public transportation</a>. Meanwhile, the International Herald Tribune tells us <a href=http://www.iht.com/bin/printfriendly.php?id=12874048>bike sales are up</a>. AND this from Reuters: <a href=”http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSL03622524″>Pact needed to save biofuels</a> (what? Crops for food, not for fuel? How last year is that??) AND finally, though we’re not big Thomas Friedman fans, we can’t help but echo some of the sentiment he expressed in <a href=”http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/28/opinion/28friedman.html”>this piece</a> in his New York Times column. <p>

There it is again! That god-awful theme music. Glen, tell us when it’s FINALLY over! This just in: In a report long delayed by partisan squabbling, the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday accused President Bush and Vice President Cheney of taking the country to war in Iraq by exaggerating evidence of links between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda. SURPRIZE! Also, Bush regime crony says goal for rich countries to curb greenhouse gases are <a href” http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN0337238320080604”>”frankly not do-able for us”</a>. No? Did you check that with Darth? <p>

Speaking of Darth and the boy emperor,“Petroleum Bonapart” by Jim Page, longtime enviro troubadour, takes us to our interview with George Huber. Word has it that his daughter will be sitting in with us so we’ll try to behave like adults……maybe.<p>

Then we’ll browse the Bus Stop Billboard for the latest:

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 from 7 - 8 PM. CITIZENS UNITED FOR A HEALTHY FUTURE GENERAL MEETING. Toxics Action will be giving a presentation on Zero Waste in the Social Room of the Unitarian Society, 220 Main Street, Northampton (please walk down the driveway and use right side door, the meeting is downstairs). The proposed Northampton Regional Landfill expansion over the Barnes aquifer threatens the public drinking water supply in our area. If it goes forward, it would exempt a landfill in a Water Supply Protection District for the first time in Massachusetts.

Thursday, June 12, 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ZONING ENFORCEMENT APPEAL City Council Chambers & Planning Director’s Office, Puchalski Building and Northampton City Hall Room 10, 212 and 210 Main Street Northampton MA.
5:30 p.m. ZONING BOARD OF APPEALS meets in the Council Chambers to hear an appeal of the Building Commissioner’s decision on alleged zoning violations of the Northampton Regional Landfill and seeking discontinuance of use as regional sanitary landfill. Citizens United for a Healthy Future. Stop the Northampton landfill expansion. www.savingparadise.info

Wednesday,June 18, 7 pm. NUCLEAR POWER: AT WHAT COST? Bangs Community Center, Boltwood Walk, Amherst, MA (behind the Unitarian Meetinghouse, Kellogg and N. Pleasant Sts.). The Enviro Show is a proud co-sponsor, btw. Call 256-1760

June 20-21, TAKING CHARGE OF OUR ENERGY FUTURE. UMass Amherst Campus Center, Amherst, MA. The Summit will be a hotbed of activity helping to create a network of thriving local communities - urban and rural - working together across race and class -building a way of life and an energy future that is sustainable and just.

Wednesday June 25. 5:30-7:30pm, ARE “GREEN JOBS” UNION JOBS? Pioneer Valley CLC, 640 Page Blvd, Springfield. Green Jobs are all the rage now - for good reason, especially in Western Mass, where retrofitting buildings could provide a lot of jobs and we have the expertise. But not everyone is talking Green Jobs as Union Jobs and the possibility of Scabby Green Jobs looms large here. A Working Group on the Green Economy will discuss the issue. Info: Jon Weissman, 827-0301, wmjwj@wmjwj.org.

So much for this week. Next time it’s Chris Cuomo with some climate crisis observations from way up north. Until then remember: listen to your Mother! ]

Although Rhett grew up in a Baha’i family, he didn’t claim the Baha’i Faith as his own until going to college. He first became a nurse and worked on a Native-American reservation. Then he went back to school and got a degree in school psychology and then went back to the reservation to work in the school system for another three years, at which time he left to get his doctorate.
