Board Nominee Bios

Diana Coryat
I am passionate about community media, and have over two decades of
experience working in the field.  With a BFA from New York University’s
Tisch School of the Arts, and an MA in Communication from the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst, I began my media career as a documentary filmmaker
and television producer.  In 1991, I founded Global Action Project, an
internationally recognized social justice media organization.  I have
designed and facilitated media programs, workshops and screenings for youth
and adults nationally and internationally.

Last year, I spent 6 months in Colombia. I taught a course called “Community
Media in the Americas” and engaged in exchanges with community media groups
across the country. It was amazing to see the vibrancy of local radio in another context.
I have been living in the Valley part-time since 2000, and will become a
full-time resident in December 2008.  I’m anxious to continue to work with
community media in the area.  Though I have much more experience in video,
I’m a long time supporter of community radio.  I was once a guest on VFR,
and brought my young people from New York to participate in the program.  It
was a great exerience.

What I would bring to the Board – Board experience – having served on G.A.P.’s Board
since its inception, a global perspective on media and progressive politics, experience
with organizational development, fundraising and outreach, and years as a media educator.
I am interested in making media accessible to young people and other groups/perspectives
that are invisible in mainstream media, such as immigrants.
Thank you for considering my candidacy.  Feel free to reach me if you have
questions ( diana_coryat [at] yahoo [dot] com ).
Andy Sewell
Andy Sewell has been volunteering at VFR since his arrival in the valley. He has worked in both commercial and community radio, as well as an audio documentary producer, a sound designer for live theater and as a station manager for his college radio station. He has a strong passion for the mission of the station: broadcasting voices less heard. Since beginning with VFR, he has worked to revive the Technology Committee to address the technical health of the organization, the Promotions Committee, acted as local host for Tuesdays and as a Studio Manager.

A Baha’i Perspective 12.20.2008

Warren Odess-Gillett interviews Derek Cockshut. Derek grew up in Lancashire England. At about the age of 15, Derek started looking at other religions such as Buddhism, Zoroastrianism and Islam. He also ran into the Baha’i Faith at that time but didn’t seriously look into it until he returned from Cambridge where he had studied economics. Derek tells a funny story about his introduction to the Baha’i Faith.

The Winter Solstice Enviro Show, 12/23, 6:30pm

Greetings Earthlings. We celebrate the Return of the Sun with Cassie and Winifred of Awentree in Easthampton. No, it’s not the manifestation of Bill O’Reilly’s “War against Christmas”, but hey, let’s talk about the Christian War against Pagans while we’re at it! Speaking of war, we’ll checkout that infamous warmonger Darth Cheney and his target practice dummy (btw, do not throw your shoes at the radio). As always, we’ll peek into The Enviro Show Echo Chamber for the news of the day and give you the Quote of the week, but first it’s time for……Revenge of the Critters! Santa attacked by bobcat in Jersey!
