Program Committee Meeting minutes 6.12.08
Thursday 7:00 pm at the station
In attendance: Eddie Kennedy, Linda Kennedy, Steve Cutting (minutes
taker), D.A. Basset, Eric Beaudry, Derek Goodwin, Steve Curylo, Strong
Oak, Alan Vogel, Keely Malone (facilitating), Jay Chase
1) New Programs: The committee was presented with five new program
proposals:
* Music. Name of Show: Two Tenths Radio. The 2 proposed DJ’s have been
on and/or sat in with DJ Alduru several times to this point. Their
names: David A. Bassett & Eric Beaudry. They propose shows twice a
month or every other week. They want Mon, Thurs or Fri 10pm-12am. They
are in a band and have been around music for 15 years. Propose local
and international music. Keely explained they would have to go
through training and work four hours before they could start their
show. They were told Eddie Kennedy would be their Liaison. They left
the meeting after their proposal was presented to the Committee.
* Arts and Culture. Programmer Name: Emily Miller. Proposed Show
Name: Colony Collective Disorder Radio. Emily was not present at the
meeting. She has been out of the area for 8 months. She has previous
been on VFR and has other community radio experience in New York. Her
show would be music and conversation with Bee Keepers. Keely explained
this Programmer would be offered a slot starting Monday, July 7th at
10:00am-12noon.
* Music. Show name: Open Face Radio, Programmer name: Mike Parham.
Proposes new music, local and contemporary rock. Mike says he has
“broad take on music” - has been in training at WMUA. Has worked in AV
at Amherst High School /has recording studio in his home/has technical
and engineering expertise/could “fix things”. Mike was not present at
meeting. Keely explained his show will be offered Thursday afternoon
from 3-4pm. He must go through training and must complete work
requirement.
* Education and Social Issues. Name: Gender Landscapes Programmer
Name: Tones Smith - proposes twice a month program / wants Sunday
afternoons. Show about transgender issues, sexuality and health care.
Keely explained Sunday afternoons not open. This programmer may be
offered Friday 3pm-4pm. Other requirements same as above.
* Syndicated Show. Show Name: Food for the Body and Music for the
Soul. Programmer Name: Angela McKenzie, an African American female.
This programmer is syndicated on WSAI, Staten Island, NY, also in
Brooklyn, NY and NJ. This Programmer will be offered Mondays 7-8 am.
The requirement of attending at least one VFR meeting per month will
be explained to all new Programmers during training.
Schedule Changes:
1) At end of June The Late English Breakfast with Eddie Kennedy will
be discontinued. Emily Miller (see new shows above) is being offered
this slot.
2) Steve Curylo of Evening Classics on Tuesday 9pm-11pm proposed to
extend his show by one hour, 9pm-12midnight. Proposal approved
effective immediately.
3) Derek Goodwin of Vegan Radio proposed to move his show from
12noon-1 pm every other Thursday to 7pm-8pm every other Thursday. This
change will become effective in July.
4) Mary Whelan wants to move Independent Muse from 3pm-4pm on Friday
to 7pm-8pm on Saturday. This change will take place in July.
Derek will update VFR schedule changes on the station computer when he
receives the minutes.
Obscenity Policy: Programmer Anna Stuart who was asked to fill in for
a programmer, Ed Russell, last Monday, accidentally aired an obscenity
laced lecture. The VFR Obscenity Policy was discussed. This
programmer has received a warning. Keely explained that rules for
obscenities are different after 10:00 pm according to the FCC;
however, VFR has taken a zero tolerance policy. Alan Vogel offered to
research and explore a revised VFR obscenity policy and will bring it
before the Programming Committee some time in the future for
discussion.
Collective Issues:
* Keely shared documentation provided by Tony Shannon which advises
that Programmers must do a minimum of 2 PSA’s per hour; to be either
read live on-air or played from the ‘Mackie”. A show promo may be
substituted for a PSA.
* Playlists should be e-mailed to the Music Collective Liaison who is
Eddie Kennedy linda_eddie_kennedy@yahoo.com.
The next meeting of the Programming Committee will be on Thursday,
July 10 at 7:00pm at the Café Evolution on Chestnut Street in
Florence.
