Madness Radio 1 Year Old!

Madness Radio: Voices and Visions from Outside Mental Health (Tuesdays 4-5) has been on the air since VFR’s very first week of operation. This unique show focuses on interviews with people diagnosed with mental illness labels like schizophrenia, bipolar, borderline and obsessive-compulsive, as well as organizers, activists, and writers from the world of madness and mental health outside the mainstream. Will Hall, diagnosed with schizoaffective schizophrenia, and organizers with the Freedom Center, a local mental health support and advocacy group, produce and host the show, and it is co-produced by The Icarus Project.

Past guests have included Kate Bornstein, Tim Wise, Darby Penney, Paula Caplan, John Judge, Robert Whitaker, Ellen Hayes, Oryx Cohen, Chaya Grossberg, Caty Simon, and Bruce Levine. Topics have included self-injury, shamanism, living with a bipolar diagnosis, peer support, how to go off psychiatric drugs, poetry, suicide, activism in England, paranoia, living with a schizophrenia diagnosis, sex work, Hurricane Katrina, environmental illness, acupuncture, forced drugging, racism, lucid dreaming, legislative activism, state hospitals, “violent mental patients,” pharmaceutical company corruption, human rights in Romania, anti-oppression therapy, and trauma.
